About the Job
ShiftCare builds care management software that helps NDIS, aged care, home care and disability support providers roster staff, coordinate clients and run their businesses. We are growing across Australia, the US, Canada and the UK and are looking for a technically minded, design-opinionated Product Owner to join our Product team.
This role is native to the way product is being built now: agents do the heavy lifting, humans make the calls.
ShiftCare runs an AI operating system for product work — agents scan competitors, synthesise support and sales signals, draft specs, score the backlog against revenue and assemble the weekly operating picture. You will run and improve this system: designing agent workflows, writing prompts and skills, reviewing machine output with a sceptical eye and deciding what should — and should not — be automated.
You will also help set the bar for product quality. You have strong opinions about UI design — hierarchy, spacing, interaction and copy — and can explain exactly why something works or doesn't. When something ships, you can communicate its value in plain English so busy care providers actually adopt it.
This is a hands-on, high-autonomy role. We care less about years carrying the Product Owner title and more about whether you can think in systems, build with agents, hold a high bar for design, communicate with precision and move work forward without being managed.
If you build agent workflows because you can't help yourself, wince at bad interfaces and have a genuine point of view on where AI is taking product craft, read on.
What You Will Do
- Run the AI operating system: Own agent workflows across research, customer insight, prioritisation, specs, engineering handoff and release. Write prompts, skills and scheduled jobs, review outputs against ground truth and continuously improve the system.
- Set the UI quality bar: Partner with design, critique user experiences and challenge work that is merely functional. Sketch, wireframe or prototype ideas and clearly articulate what needs to improve.
- Get technical: Read APIs, query data, understand data models and reason through technical trade-offs with engineers. Write clear specifications that require minimal interpretation.
- Prioritise for revenue: Shape the roadmap using revenue opportunities, churn and at-risk deals, support volume, logo and staff volume by region,
strategic fit and competitive position. Bring evidence and ranked options to decisions.
- Market what you ship: Write product announcements, release blurbs and help content that translate technical capabilities into clear customer benefits. Own adoption, not just delivery.
- Own the backlog: Maintain a healthy, prioritised Linear backlog with clear user stories, requirements and acceptance criteria.
- Drive delivery: Run refinement, planning and reviews, unblock the team and make scoping decisions without unnecessary escalation.
- Stay close to customers: Synthesise feedback from support, user testing and direct customer conversations to keep product decisions grounded in real customer problems.
- Measure and learn: Track adoption, engagement, retention and regional rollout status, using the data to decide what to build, improve or retire.
Requirements
AI-Native Operation — Essential
- You don't just use AI — you build with it. You can write production-grade prompts, create reusable agent skills, set up scheduled jobs and determine what should be automated versus kept human.
- Strong understanding of agents, agentic software, AI-native workflows and how AI is changing product development.
- A clear point of view on where AI is taking product craft and the ability to defend it.
- Healthy scepticism of AI output. You verify against ground truth and understand that confident AI can still be wrong.
- Evidence of agent workflows or automations you have designed and operated, professionally or independently.
Solid UI Design Opinions — Essential
- You notice when spacing, hierarchy, copy or interaction is wrong and can articulate why.
- You can sketch, wireframe or prototype ideas well enough to make them concrete.
- You can point to shipped work where you were personally accountable for interface quality.
- Comfortable giving and receiving direct design critique.
Technical Depth — Essential
- A genuinely technical background, such as software development, QA, data analysis, solutions engineering, technical BA,
computer science/engineering or a demonstrable self-taught path.
- Comfortable answering your own data questions rather than waiting for someone else.
- Able to read and reason about APIs, integrations and system architecture at a level that earns credibility with engineers.
Autonomy & Range — Essential
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities without a delivery manager sequencing your work.
- Experience running multiple concurrent projects or product areas while keeping them moving.
- Strong bias to action — you unblock yourself, chase answers and close the loop.
Communication — Essential
- Outstanding written English. Specs, tickets, release notes and internal communications are clear, precise and easy to act on.
- Comfortable communicating with customers, engineers and executives and translating confidently between technical and business contexts.
Experience
Tenure is not what we are optimising for. Roughly 2–4 years owning product outcomes is a guide, not a gate. A demonstrated builder beats a long CV.
We care about evidence: agent workflows you've built, interfaces you've held the bar on and adoption you've driven.
B2B SaaS experience is valuable. Deep experience in Agile ceremonies is not essential.
Bonus: Experience in care, health, disability or workforce management, plus hands-on experience with Figma, Linear, GitHub, LaunchDarkly or HubSpot.
Why ShiftCare
- Real ownership from week one across multiple product areas.
- An AI-led product and engineering organisation using genuinely modern tooling.
- Hybrid working from our Sydney base, with flexibility around how you do your best work.
- A fast-moving product team with room to grow into a senior product role.
- The opportunity to build software that makes a tangible difference to how care is delivered.
Build What Product Looks Like Next
AI is changing how great products get built. Be one of the people shaping what comes next.
At ShiftCare, agents handle the heavy lifting while humans bring the judgement, creativity and product instinct that machines cannot. If you are a technical product builder with strong design opinions, a bias for action and a genuine point of view on AI-native product development, this is your opportunity to help redefine the Product Owner role from the ground up.
Come build what product looks like next.
