About Monash Medical Centre (Clayton) Intensive Care Unit & The Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH) Intensive Care Unit Monash Medical Centre (Clayton) Intensive Care Unit is a 26-bed tertiary referral ICU accredited by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) for General Training (Core Intensive Care/C24).
The unit also fulfils CICM requirements for subspecialty exposure in thoracic surgical intensive care and neurology/neurosurgical intensive care. MMC ICU provides a state-wide Obstetric Intensive Care referral service, a Renal and Renal–Pancreas Transplant service, and supports a comprehensive range of medical and surgical subspecialties. The Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH) Intensive Care Unit is a 16-bed ICU specialising in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgical intensive care.
VHH performs nearly 800 open-heart surgeries annually, making it one of the highest-volume cardiac surgical centres in Australia. The unit offers advanced mechanical circulatory support, including 20–30 Veno-Arterial ECMO cases per year and a newly developed Impella program. It provides care for patients with complex heart failure, rhythm disturbances, and manages over 20% of Victoria’s ST‑elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) cases.
Together, MMC and VHH ICUs offer a highly stimulating and supportive clinical work environment, underpinned by an active, intensivist‑led education program.
Education opportunities
- Weekly Registrar and Senior Registrar teaching
- Dedicated CICM Part I and Part II examination preparation (for CICM trainees)
- A formal, network‑wide multidisciplinary simulation program
- An established and CICM‑accredited ICU Point‑of‑Care Ultrasound (POCUS) program, led by Monash Health intensivists and sonographer educators
- Recognised courses, including Advanced Life Support (ALS Level 2), Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care (BASIC),
and internal training in ECMO and cardiac advanced life support
- A formal mentoring program
The Monash Medical Centre Intensive Care Unit has a strong research program, with affiliations to Monash University and the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS). In addition to placements at MMC Clayton and the Victorian Heart Hospital, CICM trainees may apply to undertake rotations in Anaesthesia and General Medicine during their employment with Monash Health.
Selected candidates may also apply for a rotation in Paediatric Intensive Care (PICU) at the adjoining Monash Children’s Hospital (MCH); please note that a separate application is required for MCH PICU Registrar positions. Senior Registrars may also have the prospect to undertake a six‑month rotation at The Alfred ICU to fulfil the trauma component of CICM training.
About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists for suitably qualified applicants to join the Monash Medical Centre (Clayton) Intensive Care Unit and the Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH) Intensive Care Unit as an Intensive Care Registrar or Senior Registrar in 2027. Both full‑time and part‑time applications are welcome.
Successful candidates will work at both sites during their employment period. Registrars and Senior Registrars will be responsible for the care of acutely unwell patients within the MMC and VHH Intensive Care Units, under the supervision of a Consultant Intensivist. As part of their role, successful applicants will also contribute to the care of acutely unwell patients throughout the hospital, including participation in the institution’s Medical Emergency Team (MET) responses.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. There is a strong emphasis on career development, trainee wellbeing, and progression through the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) training program. Trainees will rotate across both VHH and MMC, providing exposure to a broad range of practice styles, clinical environments, and patient cohorts.
Rostering is designed to optimise continuity of care while promoting trainee wellbeing. Trainees are well supported both during and after hours, with opportunities to progressively develop independent practice appropriate to their level of experience and confidence.
Required skills & experience
- Previous experience in adult Intensive Care Units
- Collaborative approach to practice
- Excellent communication and patient advocacy skills
Mandatory requirements of the role
- Primary medical degree (MBBS) or equivalent
- All candidates will require Australian working rights
