Intermediate Solicitor (Criminal Law Practice)
Job: 1614081 | Full-Time | Permanent | Tamworth, NSW | $129,490 - $138,491 (Based on Experience)

The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the Criminal Law Practice, you will provide culturally appropriate legal advice, advocacy, and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in criminal law matters, including EAGP matters. You will also support outreach, early intervention, and the effective operation of the practice. Each day, you will:
- Oversee the day-to-day management of the criminal law practice, including supervision of staff, matter allocation, rostering, diary management, and maintaining effective office operations.
- Provide high quality legal representation and advocacy in complex criminal matters across the Local, Children’s, and District Courts, while ensuring culturally appropriate services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
- Supervise, mentor, and support junior solicitors through training, advocacy development, case preparation, and ongoing professional development.
- Liaise and maintain strong working relationships with courts, counsel, Legal Aid, government agencies, and other justice stakeholders to ensure the effective conduct of criminal matters.
- Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and organisational obligations,
including ALS policies, briefing procedures, workplace health and safety requirements, and professional standards.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the practice through law reform activities, staff training, management of complex matters, and maintaining current knowledge of criminal law and court procedures.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated criminal lawyer with a strong understanding of, and respect for, the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You bring demonstrated expertise in criminal law advocacy, leadership, and mentoring, together with a commitment to delivering high-quality, culturally appropriate legal services and achieving positive outcomes for clients and communities. Key strengths include:
- Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with respect for cultural practices and community engagement.
- Legal qualifications with a current NSW Practising Certificate and at least 2 years’ experience in criminal law practice and procedure.
- Strong advocacy skills with experience managing complex criminal matters in the District, Local, and Children’s Courts.
- Proven leadership, supervisory, and mentoring abilities within a multidisciplinary legal team environment.
- Excellent communication, organisational,
and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.
- Commitment to professional, ethical, and safe workplace practices, including willingness to travel for court work, outreach, and training as required.
