Section overview

The Safety Systems Section is responsible for developing ARPANSA’s capability to assess holistic safety aspects of its licence holders’ activities, incorporating technical, human and organisational factors affecting or contributing to safety into the assessments. This will be achieved partly through the RSB compliance monitoring program and working in close collaboration with the wider regulatory team. Safety Systems manages the Regulatory Administration Database (RAD), analyses trends in licence holder performance and promotes continuous improvement and holistic safety in licence holder activities. It facilitates the assessments of efficiency and effectiveness of ARPANSA’s regulation of Commonwealth licence holders, manages the RSB quality system including assisting regulatory staff to follow workflows, and regulatory content on the ARPANSA website. The section supports the Nuclear Safety Committee.

Primary purpose of the role

In this role, you will provide a broad range of administrative and regulatory support services to the Regulatory Services Branch (RSB) and the Director of Safety Systems. You will develop a working knowledge of ARPANSA’s regulatory systems, including ARPANSA legislation and regulatory policy, and become proficient in using the RAD. You will use RAD to monitor workflows, support business processes, and provide functional advice to ARPANSA staff and stakeholders. Drawing on RAD data, you will also undertake routine analysis and draft performance reports on ARPANSA’s regulatory activities and contribute new ideas and identify opportunities to improve our processes.

You will plan,



coordinate and facilitate meetings and events, including the annual branch training day and the annual licence holder forum. You will also provide administrative secretariat support to the Nuclear Safety Committee (NSC), and manage procurement activities, including purchase orders and invoicing.

The role is a key administrative point of contact between ARPANSA and its stakeholders. You will build rapport and maintain productive working relationships with stakeholders, including by providing advice on straightforward regulatory and compliance matters.

This is a non-ongoing contract until June 2027.

Key accountabilities

- Provide administrative and regulatory support services to the Regulatory Services Branch and the Director of Safety Systems as required.
- Develop and maintain a working knowledge of ARPANSA’s regulatory systems including the RAD, legislation and regulatory policy
- Manage regulatory information and workflows and support regulatory business processes by providing functional advice and support to ARPANSA staff and stakeholders on the use of the RAD.
- Build and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Provide advice on straightforward regulatory process and compliance matters within the scope of the role.
- Undertake routine analysis of RAD data to support reporting on regulatory activities including by drafting performance reports on ARPANSA’s regulatory activities.
- Plan, coordinate and facilitate meetings and events, including the annual branch training day and annual licence holder forum. Provide administrative secretariat support to the Nuclear Safety Committee.
- Manage procurement activities, including purchase orders and invoicing.

You will be able to identify and solve problems and deal effectively with day-to-day administrative issues that impact, or have the potential to impact, upon the operations of the branch.

You will possess a broad-based proficiency in using technology including the operation of Microsoft Office suite, database systems and electronic document management systems. You will be adaptable to support team outcomes and objectives. You will also be required to have an ability to work effectively with the scientific, professional and technical staff within the Branch.





You must hold Australian citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate from time to time as required. ARPANSA requires all new employees to obtain and maintain a national security clearance as a condition of engagement. You must also meet required pre-employment checks as necessary.

Selection criteria

- Understand the work context, the regulatory setting and maintain an awareness of the Agency’s regulatory objectives;
- Demonstrated ability and experience in the operation of the Microsoft Office Suite of products, including databases and electronic records management systems
- Well-developed organisational skills including the ability to prioritise tasks to manage workloads
- Well-developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, together with a proven ability to liaise with all levels of staff and external stakeholders
