Multicultural Disability Advocacy Australia - Granville NSW
Granville, NSW | Regular travel throughout regional NSW | Full-time
Applications close: 28 August 2026
Multicultural Disability Advocacy Australia (MDAA) is a leading disability advocacy organisation in NSW. We advocate for the rights and interests of people with disability, with specialist expertise supporting people from multicultural and diverse language backgrounds.
We are seeking a Statewide Disability Advocate to join our team based in Granville. The role combines individual advocacy with regular travel throughout regional NSW and has a strong focus on capacity building, supported decision making and culturally protected practice.
About the role
You will work alongside people with disability to build their knowledge, confidence and capacity to understand their rights, make their own decisions and take action on issues affecting their lives.
Our approach supports people to understand their options, participate in decisions and advocate for themselves wherever possible.
Matters commonly involve the NDIS, housing, Centrelink, education, discrimination, complaints and government decisions. The role may also involve reviews, appeals and tribunal matters, providing opportunities to develop professional experience in complex administrative and legal processes.
Your work will include:
- Providing individual advocacy and building capacity to self-advocate.
- Using supported decision making to help people understand options and make their own decisions.
- Providing culturally protected advocacy that considers culture, language, family and migration experiences.
- Helping people understand and exercise their rights.
- Assisting with complaints, applications, reviews and appeals.
- Supporting people through tribunal and other formal review processes.
- Reviewing decisions, evidence, legislation, policies and correspondence.
- Preparing submissions,
complaints and other correspondence.
- Advocating with government agencies, service providers and other organisations.
- Supporting people through meetings, negotiations and conferences.
- Delivering community education and capacity-building activities.
- Building relationships with multicultural communities across NSW.
- Identifying systemic issues through individual advocacy.
The work is varied and often complex. It requires strong analytical skills, sound judgement and practical problem-solving. It also provides opportunities to broaden your professional experience across disability rights, advocacy, administrative decision-making, reviews, appeals and tribunal processes.
Travel
This position is based at our Granville office but involves significant travel throughout regional NSW.
You can expect to travel to regional communities approximately every few weeks, depending on operational requirements. Travel may involve overnight stays and driving considerable distances.
A current unrestricted Australian driver's licence is essential, together with a genuine willingness to undertake regular regional travel.
About you
We are particularly interested in applicants with a background in law or the social sciences, or experience working with rights, legislation, complaints, review processes, government systems or complex social issues.
Qualifications in law, legal studies or the social sciences are highly regarded. However,
we also encourage applications from people with other professional or educational backgrounds where their experience provides transferable skills or a unique perspective relevant to advocacy.
You will ideally have:
- Qualifications or experience in law, legal studies, social sciences, advocacy or another relevant professional field.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to understand and apply legislation, policy and procedural requirements.
- An ability to work in ways that build people's capacity rather than create dependency.
- An understanding of supported decision making and the right of people with disability to make and participate in decisions affecting them.
- An understanding of culturally safe practice and an ability to critically consider cultural assumptions when working with individuals and families.
- Strong advocacy and negotiation skills.
- The ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload.
- A current unrestricted Australian driver's licence.
- The ability and willingness to undertake regular travel throughout regional NSW.
Experience in disability advocacy, community legal services, administrative law, the NDIS, government decision-making, complaints or review processes will be highly regarded.
We recognise that valuable advocacy skills and perspectives can come from many different professional, educational and lived experiences. People with disability and people from multicultural and diverse language backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
Location
Granville, NSW, with regular travel throughout metropolitan and regional NSW.
