SCE is looking for experienced Shift Team Leaders to join the No.6 Blast Furnace Slag Handling Services team at Port Kembla Steelworks.
This is a hands-on frontline leadership role supporting the safe, reliable and efficient delivery of 24/7 slag handling services. Working across a 12 hour day/night shift roster, you will lead operational crews, coordinate shift priorities and help keep slag handling activities running safely and effectively.
You will work closely with the Operations Manager and Supervisor, maintenance team and operational stakeholders, providing explicit direction to crews and maintaining strong leadership and communication throughout each shift.
About the Role
As a Slag Handling Shift Team Leader you will be responsible for leading and coordinating your crew across the brand new granulation plant, mobile equipment and slag handling activities.
Safety and environmental performance will be central to the role. You will set clear expectations for the shift, coordinate work activities, monitor operational conditions and ensure issues are identified and escalated early.
This is a hands‑on role. In addition to leading the crew, you will operate mobile equipment where required to support shift coverage and crib relief, including Kress carriers and Cat 990 front‑end loaders.
Key responsibilities
- Leading shift crews to deliver safe and reliable slag handling operations.
- Coordinating shift priorities, work activities and operational resources.
- Conducting pre-starts, toolbox talks and effective shift handovers.
- Maintaining strong safety and environmental standards across the shift.
- Manage and coordinate site emergency response and recovery.
- Monitoring operational and equipment issues and escalating these as required.
- Working closely with maintenance and other operational teams to support continuity of operations.
- Operating mobile plant as required to support operational coverage.
- Completing shift reporting and communicating key issues to the Operations Manager and Supervisor.
- Supporting continuous improvement in safety, reliability and shift performance.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for a practical, safety‑focused frontline leader who is comfortable working with people and equipment in a heavy industrial environment.
You will bring:
- Experience as a Team Leader, Leading Hand or in a similar frontline leadership role.
- Experience in industrial, mining, steelmaking, manufacturing or other heavy industry.
- Strong safety awareness and a practical understanding of risk controls and site procedures.
- The ability to lead crews, coordinate priorities and make sound decisions during a shift.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- A practical, hands‑on approach to problem solving.
Desirable experience and qualifications include
- Experience in slag handling, steelworks, smelting, mining or bulk materials handling.
- Relevant frontline leadership, safety or operational qualifications.
- Experience operating mobile equipment such as forklift, front‑end loader, excavator and skid steer.
- Experience operating Kress carriers or similar heavy mobile plant.
