Racing NSW is the statutory body for thoroughbred horse racing in NSW and owns a number of properties across the state as part of its Equine Welfare Program.
Bandanora is a key property within the Equine Welfare Program, providing spelling, education, retraining and rehoming opportunities for Thoroughbred horses following their racing careers. The property also supports the education of younger and lightly handled Thoroughbreds, preparing them for successful second careers.
We are seeking an experienced and confident Rider / Retrainer to join the Bandanora team. Reporting directly to the Property Manager, this hands-on role will focus on educating, retraining and assessing Thoroughbreds with varying levels of experience, helping prepare them for successful rehoming.
Key Responsibilities
The Rider / Retrainer role is responsible for:
- Riding and retraining Thoroughbred horses for rehoming and second careers.
- Educating young and lightly handled Thoroughbreds through foundation handling and progressing them under saddle.
- Developing horses through groundwork, flatwork and exposure to varied environments to build confidence and good manners.
- Assessing each horse's temperament, aptitude and suitability for a range of equestrian disciplines and homes.
- Providing high standards of daily horse care, including feeding, grooming, rugging and general husbandry.
- Safely handling horses during catching, leading, float loading, turnout and routine management.
- Monitoring horse health, soundness and behaviour, and reporting any concerns promptly.
- Maintaining accurate records of each horse's training progress and behaviour.
- Assisting with the preparation of horses for inspections, viewings and rehoming.
- Upholding Racing NSW's equine welfare standards and secure work practices at all times.
Skills & Experience
The successful applicant will demonstrate:
- Proven experience riding and handling Thoroughbreds.
- Experience retraining or educating horses for performance, pleasure or equestrian careers.
- Experience starting young or lightly educated horses under saddle using calm, consistent horsemanship.
- Excellent horsemanship skills and confidence riding a variety of horses.
- A sound understanding of equine behaviour, learning theory and welfare.
- The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a small team.
- A proactive attitude with a strong commitment to horse welfare and workplace safety.
- Positive communication skills and attention to detail.
Desirable Qualifications
- Equestrian or racing industry background
- Experience retraining Thoroughbreds for performance or pleasure careers
