The Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman is seeking an experienced and motivated APS 6 Financial Accountant to join the Finance and Property Team.
This role provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to the delivery of high-quality financial accounting and reporting outcomes for the Office. Working within a small and collaborative team, the APS 6 Financial Accountant will support month-end and year-end financial processes, taxation compliance, asset accounting and financial reporting requirements.
The successful candidate will work closely with internal stakeholders and external agencies to ensure the integrity of financial information and compliance with legislative and policy requirements. The role also provides opportunities to contribute to process improvements and support the ongoing development of financial systems and reporting capabilities.
The key duties of the position include:
The duties of the role include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare and review month-end accounting journals, including accruals, prepayments, payroll and finance lease journals.
- Prepare Business Activity Statements (BAS), Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) and Taxable Payments Annual Report (TPAR) returns, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.
- Perform complex reconciliations and asset accounting activities, including depreciation calculations, acquisitions and disposals.
- Prepare and submit monthly actuals reporting through the Commonwealth Budget Management System (CBMS).
- Prepare and maintain annual financial statement working papers, lead schedules, and supporting documentation to ensure timely and accurate completion of financial statement audit.
- Maintain the accuracy and integrity of financial data within TechnologyOne and other financial management systems.
- Ensure compliance with Australian Accounting Standards, the PGPA framework and organisational policies.
- Analyse financial information, investigate issues and provide practical advice and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Build and maintain effective stakeholder relationships while delivering high-quality financial support and guidance.
- Manage competing priorities and deliver accurate outcomes within strict reporting deadlines.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in financial processes, controls and reporting practices.
Eligibility
The successful candidate will have formal qualifications in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related discipline and progress towards, or completion of a skilled accounting qualification (CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand) will be highly regarded.
Additionally, the successful candidate must:
- be an Australian citizen
- be willing to undergo a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC)
- be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance.
