About FASD Services
The Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) service, through Developmental Paediatrics, provides specialist multidisciplinary assessments for children with pre-natal alcohol exposure who present with complex neurological, developmental, and behavioural symptoms. The service also delivers education, resources, and clinical training to professionals working with children and families impacted by FASD.
The Clinic pathway provides a culturally safe, strengths-based model of care for children and families, embedding cultural knowledge, trauma-aware practice, and partnership with community.
About the Role
There is an opportunity for 2x Paediatricians experienced in Developmental paediatrics to contribute to the VicFAS First Nations clinic team and the VicFAS secondary consultation team at Monash Children's Hospital, to undertake assessment of children with pre-natal alcohol exposure and broader neurodevelopmental problems who have been identified as being at risk of FASD.
The Paediatrician in VicFAS First Nations clinic team will undertake medical and developmental assessment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children with pre-natal alcohol exposure and broader neurodevelopmental conditions who have been identified by their Community Paediatrician.
The Paediatrician in the VicFAS secondary consultation team will undertake medical and developmental assessment of children with pre-natal alcohol exposure and broader neurodevelopmental conditions who have been identified by their Community Paediatrician. They will provide secondary consultation advice and review of reports to paediatricians to assist in local diagnosis and management.
Both Paediatricians position will provide high level clinical assessments, contribute to multidisciplinary formulation, provide education to students and trainees, feedback to families and caregivers, and clinical recommendations as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Participate in multidisciplinary diagnostic clinics for children aged 3 -10 years, in accordance with the Australian FASD Diagnostic Guidelines (2025), ensuring culturally safe, respectful, and trauma-informed practice.
- Deliver high-quality, culturally responsive medical and developmental assessments that recognise each child's strengths, cultural identity, and family context.
- Contribute to the development of FASD diagnostic reports by integrating multidisciplinary findings,
ensuring recommendations are practical, culturally appropriate, and support the child's participation across home, school, and community.
- Provide transparent, sensitive, and culturally respectful verbal feedback to families, carers, education providers, and community services, supporting understanding and engagement with recommended supports.
- Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with broader FASD Services, Developmental Paediatrics team, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) and community partners.
What you need
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
- Appropriate health professional tertiary qualifications
- Fellowship of the FRACP or equivalent
- Working with Children's Certificate
- Membership with FRACP and ASOHNS
