SPIDER COMMUNICATIONS PTY LTD The Telecommunications Technologist is responsible for carrying out specialised technical support, installation, testing and fault-diagnosis functions for telecommunications networks and customer access infrastructure. The role focuses on upgrading existing copper-based internet services to fibre optic connections, including planning network routes, installing and commissioning fibre infrastructure, diagnosing service faults, monitoring network performance and ensuring customer-premises equipment is installed and operating to required standards.

Task & responsibilities

Plan, prepare and support the development of customer access telecommunications network infrastructure, including determining suitable routes for fibre optic cabling from service pits, conduits or network access points to customer premises. Upgrade existing copper internet connections to fibre optic telecommunications services in accordance with technical specifications, work instructions, safety requirements and quality standards. Select, install, connect and configure telecommunications equipment and associated infrastructure, including fibre optic cables, copper cabling, network terminals, premises connection devices, network termination devices and related customer-premises equipment.

Install, maintain, test and diagnose malfunctions in telecommunications cabling, fibre optic systems, network access infrastructure and associated electronic communication equipment. Use specialist testing and diagnostic equipment,



including PON meters, optical power meters and fibre splicing equipment, to identify fibre breaks, signal loss, poor optical performance, hardware faults and service interruptions. Splice, terminate, connect and verify fibre optic cables to ensure network continuity, signal integrity and compliance with required performance standards.

Commission newly installed or upgraded fibre connections by testing service performance, confirming equipment operation and ensuring the customer service is active and operating correctly. Provide ongoing operational support by troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing and resolving telecommunications network performance faults, defects and malfunctions. Monitor the performance of telecommunications network components and customer access equipment, and elevate complex technical issues where required.

Prepare worksites and perform duties in service pits, conduits, node sites, exchange environments and customer premises while following workplace health and safety procedures, site access requirements and risk controls. Maintain accurate records of work performed, equipment installed, test results, fault findings, cable routes, asset locations and job completion details. Liaise with supervisors, customers, service providers, suppliers and other technical personnel to coordinate installation activities,



resolve service issues and support timely completion of telecommunications works.

Comply with communication policies, technical procedures, regulatory requirements, documentation standards and organisational quality assurance processes.

Qualification & experience Relevant qualification in IT, Telecommunications, or a related field 3 years of relevant Australian experience Strong technical knowledge of fibre optic and copper telecommunications networks, customer access infrastructure and broadband service delivery. Ability to read and interpret network plans, cable routes, installation instructions, technical drawings and work orders.

Competence in using telecommunications testing, diagnostic, splicing and commissioning equipment. Sound problem-solving skills for identifying, diagnosing and rectifying network and equipment faults. Knowledge of safe work practices when working in pits, conduits, exchanges, node sites, roadside environments and customer premises.

Ability to maintain accurate technical documentation, job records and test results. Effective communication skills for liaising with customers, supervisors, contractors, vendors and service providers.
