Comprises of four palliative care consultants, and currently two other palliative care registrars. The medical practitioners work across the MCH and NWRH, as well as the community, alongside palliative care nursing staff. The Palliative Care in Service is an inpatient ward area with four beds located in the MCH. This is part of the broader Specialist Palliative Care Service, which is based at Parkside in Burnie.

The North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) is a modern facility that provides acute care facilities for residents of the North West region of Tasmania. It is a University Teaching Hospital for the Rural Clinical School of the University of Tasmania.

The Role

- We are seeking a motivated Registrar – Palliative Care. In this role, on a day-to-day basis you will be responsible for liaising and collaborating with other treating clinicians for both public inpatients and outpatients within the Hospital, Aged Care and Community settings.
- The Tasmanian Health Service (THS) – North West Region is an innovative and agile organisation dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of our community in Tasmania’s beautiful North West. - The Rural Generalist Palliative Care Registrar position is accredited by the GP colleges and Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).
- Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) - 12 months Advanced Specialised Training term in Palliative Care to train registrars on all ACRRM pathways. Accredited in 2023 with a site visit. ACRRM Registrars can also do 6 months training as Foundations in Palliative Medicine (previously Diploma of Palliative Medicine).
- Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) - 6 months Extended Skills training and 12 months Advanced Skills training. Rural Generalist training is also accredited. Registrars can complete the Foundations in Palliative Medicine (previously Diploma of Palliative Medicine).
- RACP - accreditation for Foundations in Palliative Medicine (previously Diploma of Palliative Medicine). Accredited for Advanced Trainees in Palliative Medicine for Core Term 2 Community and Elective Term.




- THS – North West Region also has a close working relationship with the University of Tasmania’s Rural Clinical School.

Fixed term full time, day worker position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from 1 November 2026 until 7 February 2027.

You will receive 10 hours of paid, protected training time per fortnight, pro rata.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.

Medical Practitioner Level 5 - 11 $138,978 - $194,675 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

- Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year
- North and North-West Tasmania Recruitment and Retention Allowance of $10,000 per annum, paid fortnightly
- Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $3,278 per annum, pro rata
- Travel and relocation assistance support is available
- Professional development and accelerated pathways.
- A range of leave entitlements, including study leave and Professional Development Support.
- Fitness Passport – You, and your family can access 40+ fitness facilities across Tasmania for just $14.50 per week per person, or $28.05 for a family.

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria:

General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia

Enrolled in the relevant speciality training program

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

Participant of current General Practitioner training or current Trainee of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine or a current General Practitioner.

Has successfully completed all fellowship examinations relevant to their training program and employment and is within 1 year of obtaining specialist fellowship.

Current Driver’s Licence
