About the role

Western Health offers over 85 Hospital Medical Officer (HMO/PGY2) positions suitable for applicants who will hold General Medical Registration with AHPRA by February 2027.

Western Health offers a supported training environment where Senior Medical Staff make an effort to know you personally. Junior doctors are supported by dedicated Directors of Clinical Training and Medical Education Officers. Western Health offers a variety of rotations as a PGY2 Hospital Medical Officer, these include:

- Emergency Medicine (Adults & Paediatrics)
- GEM/Subacute
- General Surgery
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- Orthopaedic Surgery
- Paediatric Medicine
- Paediatric Emergency Medicine
- Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
- Respiratory Medicine
- Thoracic Surgery
- Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery
- Urology
- Vascular Surgery

Note: available rotations may be subject to change.

Once appointments are finalised, you will be provided with a set list of jobs, consisting of four rotations across the year, i.e. a rota. These rotas are approved by PMCV to meet the National Framework requirements, meaning you need to have experiences in type A (undifferentiated patients), type B (chronic illness) and C (acute care) across the year.

We have a strong focus on junior doctor education with a dedicated HMO education program, simulation training and workshops for junior doctors, hospital grand rounds and a broad range of unit-specific education sessions. The Western Centre for Health Research and Education (WCHRE) at the Sunshine Hospital campus is a purpose built teaching and research facility,



including a state‑of‑the‑art simulation centre.

Key responsibilities

- Work under the supervision and support of the registrar or consultant to further develop general clinical and decision‑making skills
- Assume responsibility for patient care in accordance with the care model of the ward/unit, ensuring that clinical procedures are performed in accordance with Western Health policy and procedure
- Ensure quality patient care via clinical assessment, admissions and development of management plans
- Participate in on‑going assessment of competencies via a mid and end of term unit assessment
