We are seeking an accomplished Principal Clinical Scientist - Molecular Genetics to join Virtus Diagnostics in Revesby and provide scientific leadership within our growing genomic pathology service.

About the Role

Reporting to the Head of Department, Molecular Genetics, you will provide senior scientific and clinical leadership across all aspects of molecular genetic testing and reporting.

You will oversee laboratory operations,



variant interpretation, quality systems and scientific decision-making while working closely with clinicians, genetic counsellors and pathology leaders to support exceptional patient outcomes.

This position plays a key role in ensuring our genomic services remain scientifically robust, clinically relevant and responsive to advances in technology and best practice.

Key areas of responsibility include:

Scientific Leadership

- Provide scientific oversight across molecular genetic testing workflows
- Lead interpretation and classification of genomic variants
- Support development of laboratory systems, procedures and knowledge bases
- Drive quality, consistency and efficiency across testing services
- Provide expert guidance on complex cases and scientific challenges

Clinical Reporting

- Authorise and oversee molecular genetics reporting processes
- Advise clinicians regarding test selection, result interpretation and clinical implications
- Act as a senior escalation point for complex genomic findings

Innovation and Service Development

- Lead validation and implementation of new technologies, assays and bioinformatics pipelines
- Support research collaborations and innovation projects
- Identify opportunities to enhance diagnostic capability and patient outcomes

Leadership and Mentoring

- Mentor scientists, registrars and laboratory staff
- Foster a culture of learning, collaboration and scientific excellence




- Support competency assessment and professional development programs
- Contribute to succession planning and capability building across the team

About You

We are seeking a recognised scientific leader with deep expertise in molecular genetics and genomic diagnostics.

You will bring:

- A PhD (or equivalent) in molecular genetics, genomics, human genetics or a related discipline
- 10+ years working extensively within an accredited diagnostic genomics laboratory, with demonstrated leadership responsibility and report authorisation experience
- Experience authorising and interpreting molecular genetic reports
- Strong expertise in variant classification frameworks including ACMG/AMP, ClinGen and related standards
- Demonstrated leadership experience within a scientific or clinical laboratory environment
- Experience with quality and accreditation frameworks including NATA, NPAAC and ISO 15189
- Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills
