The National Workplace Health and Safety Manager is responsible for leading and continually improving the organisation's Work Health and Safety Management System (WHSMS), ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety, environmental legislation, workers compensation and return to work across the Vellex sites.
The role provides professional technical advice and support to management in preventing injuries, improving safety culture, managing physical and psychosocial risks and hazards, facilitating early intervention and sustainable return to work outcomes and ensuring that the WHSMS manual also incorporates Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) and chain of responsibility (CoR).
Maintaining a visible and approachable presence across the business, the role builds trusted relationships with employees at all levels and provides an independent point of contact for raising workplace health and safety concerns where risks may not have been adequately addressed.
The position partners with operational leaders, compliance, training, and human resources to integrate safety and compliance into all aspects of the business and promote a proactive risk management culture.
Key responsibilities
- Review, update and continuously improve the WHS Management System Manual
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation including WHS, Workers Compensation
- Ensure WHS policies,
procedures and risk management systems are regularly reviewed, updated and effectively implemented
- Lead hazard identification, risk assessments and oversee the implementation of effective controls
- Oversee psychosocial hazard management, fatigue management and critical risk controls
- Lead serious incident investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented and effective consultation takes place
- Oversee workers compensation and early intervention
- Manage internal audits, inspections and regulatory compliance activities
- Liaise with regulators, insurers, rehabilitation providers and external consultants
About you
- Demonstrated success in a similar role
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Ability to influence, lead and drive safety outcomes
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust through visibility, approachability, and emotional intelligence
- Tertiary qualifications in Work Health and Safety management
- Current Driver Licence
- Ability to travel interstate on short notice
- Self-sufficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Highly developed investigation and root cause analysis skills
- Robust organisational and project management skills
