About the Role
Chelgrave Contracting is seeking experienced people for our client in the power electronics and industrial power systems industry, based in a workshop in South West Sydney. Our client designs, repairs, and services power conversion equipment including UPS systems, rectifiers, industrial chargers, and battery storage solutions.
We're looking for a hands-on Power Electronics Technician who can diagnose and repair complex electronic and power systems to a high standard, working both independently and as part of a close-knit team.
Key Responsibilities
- Systematic fault-finding using multimeters, oscilloscopes, meggers, and power analysers
- Component-level repair — soldering, wiring, PCB diagnostics, and module replacement
- Working confidently across AC/DC principles, three-phase systems, and power conversion (AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC)
- Reading and interpreting electrical schematics
- Servicing lead-acid and lithium-ion battery systems
- Reverse-engineering and diagnosing from first principles when documentation is missing or incomplete
Essential Requirements
- Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident (some future work is defence-related)
- Current NSW driver's licence
- 3+ years' practical experience in power electronics, industrial electrical,
or complex electronic repair
- Demonstrated safe work practices, including the ability to work safely and unsupervised on live/DC systems
Highly Regarded
- Living in South West Sydney or within a reliable daily commute
- Trade Certificate, Diploma, or military technical trade qualification
- IPC-7711/7721, J-STD-001, or IPC-A-610 certification (or similar)
- Electrical licence (held or working towards — support provided to attain)
- Prior experience with UPS, rectifiers, industrial chargers, or battery storage
- ADF background (RAAF/RAN/Army electrical, avionics, electronics, or comms-electronics trades) — veterans strongly encouraged to apply
- Eligibility for an Australian security clearance
About You
- A self-starter who works autonomously without needing step-by-step instructions
- A natural troubleshooter who's comfortable with ambiguity and unfamiliar systems
- Resourceful and curious — you like pulling things apart to understand them, and finding alternatives when parts are obsolete
- Quality-focused — you take pride in repairs that last
- Reliable and flexible, with robust ownership through to completion
