Chelgrave Contracting is seeking an experienced, trade-qualified Welder / Fabricator for an estimated 4-month casual assignment with a well-established client in the automotive sector. This is hands-on sheet metal work in a busy workshop workplace, fabricating and welding mild steel components down to 3mm gauge material.
If you take pride in clean, precise welds on lighter-gauge material and enjoy variety in your work, this role is for you.
Key Responsibilities
- Fabrication and welding of mild steel sheet metal components (down to 3mm)
- Reading and interpreting technical drawings and job specifications
- Cutting, folding, forming, and assembly of sheet metal parts
- Measuring, marking out, and fit-up with tight tolerances
- Grinding and finishing work to automotive quality standards
- Maintaining a safe, clean, and organised work area
About You
- Trade qualification (Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade or equivalent)
- Proven experience welding mild steel,
particularly thin-gauge sheet metal, where heat control and distortion management are critical
- Confident MIG welder; TIG experience highly regarded
- Experience in automotive fabrication or a similar precision environment preferred
- Ability to read and work from engineering drawings
- Strong attention to detail and pride in the quality of your work
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently or as part of a team
- Own basic hand tools and PPE
- Valid driver's licence and reliable transport
