About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Firmware Engineer to join our engineering team, developing embedded systems for medical devices and other safety critical applications. You'll work across the full stack of embedded development, from bare metal drivers through to RTOS based architectures, on products where reliability and rigor matter. This role also plays a key part in systems architecture and process development across the engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain firmware for embedded systems using C/C++ on ARM based microcontrollers (STM32 family)
- Architect and implement both bare metal and RTOS based firmware solutions
- Contribute to systems architecture, defining hardware/firmware partitioning and interfaces across the product
- Develop and integrate communication protocols including UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, and USB
- Contribute to system level design decisions balancing performance, power, and reliability
- Support verification and validation activities, including unit testing and hardware in the loop testing
- Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and maintain thorough technical documentation
- Drive process development and improvement across the firmware team, including coding standards, workflows, and toolchains
- Collaborate closely with hardware, systems, and quality engineers throughout the product lifecycle
- Support root cause analysis and debugging of field issues using tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers,
and JTAG debuggers
- Contribute to and help maintain compliance with relevant safety and quality standards
Required Skills and Experience
- 5+ years of qualified embedded firmware development experience
- Strong proficiency in C and C++ for embedded/microcontroller applications
- Hands on experience with STM32 or other ARM Cortex M based microcontrollers
- Demonstrated experience in systems architecture for embedded products
- Experience developing or improving engineering processes (development workflows, standards, review practices)
- Solid understanding of RTOS concepts (task scheduling, synchronization, memory management) as well as bare metal development
- Practical experience with common embedded communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, USB, or similar)
- Comfortable working with low level hardware, datasheets, and reference manuals
- Experience with version control (Git) and embedded toolchains/debuggers
Highly Regarded
- Experience with VHDL or Verilog and FPGA based digital design
- Experience developing firmware for medical devices or other safety critical industries (automotive, aerospace, industrial)
- Familiarity with standards such as IEC 62304, IEC 60601, ISO 13485, ISO 26262, or DO 178
- Experience with formal V&V; processes, risk management, and design controls
- Exposure to wireless protocols (BLE, Wi Fi, LoRa)
- Experience with static analysis tools, MISRA C compliance, or safety certified toolchains
