Our Role
Kingswood College is seekingan experienced and compassionate Counsellor to join our student wellbeing teamand provide responsive counselling support to students from Kindergarten toYear 12 on an as needs basis.
This role is designed tocomplement the work of our permanent Counselling and Wellbeing Team, providingadditional professional counselling capacity when required. Within thiscapacity you will focus on responsive, short-term support rather than carryingan ongoing therapeutic caseload.
This position is particularlysuited to an early career counsellor seeking to develop experience within asupportive school community or an experienced practitioner looking for aflexible counselling role.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the DeputyPrincipal, you will work collaboratively with the College’s Counselling teamand other staff involved in supporting student wellbeing.
Your responsibilities wouldbe to:
- Provide short-term,interim counselling support to students from Kindergarten to Year 12.
- Conduct initialassessment and brief intervention, including suicidal ideation andself-harm risk assessment and safety planning where required.
- Utilise evidence-basedtherapeutic approaches with trauma-informed and neuro-affirming frameworks.
- Support studentsexperiencing emotional distress, interpersonal difficulties and school-relatedchallenges.
- Provide support duringcrises or critical incidents and contribute professional advice torelevant College leaders.
- Ensure clear and timelyhandover to the College’s permanent counselling team and recognising when furthersupport through referral to external health professionals is required.
- Work collaborativelywith College staff families and external health professionals to supportcontinuity of care.
- Maintaining accurate,timely and confidential student records.
- Meet professional,ethical, confidentiality, mandatory reporting, risk management andchild-safety requirements
About You
You are a qualifiedcounselling or mental health professional who is confident working withchildren and young people, and able to quickly establish trust and rapport. Youhave strong understanding of the responsibilities that come with supportingstudents in a school workplace and can balance compassionate, student-centredpractice with sound professional judgement and effective communication.
To be successful inthis role, you will bring:
- Current professional registration or accreditation as a Counsellor,Psychologist Mental Health Nurse or Mental Health Accredited Social Worker,for example through AHPRA, AASW, PACFA or ACA.
- The ability to establish positive rapport with students across theK-12 age range.
- Knowledge and demonstrated capability in suicide and self-harm riskassessment and safety planning, including ASIST certification.
- Knowledge and capability in family violence and child safetypractice, including MARAM certification.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail, sound qualified judgement andeffective record-management skills.
- A strong personal and professional commitment to child safety andchild-safe practice.
- A current Working with Children Check and Police Check
- Current First Aid and CPR, Management of Asthma Risks andEmergencies, and First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis training [orwillingness to obtain].
Previous experiencesupporting children or young people and relevant postgraduate qualificationswill be highly regarded.
