Overview
I’m partnering with an advanced Software company to find a Senior Rust Systems Engineer who wants to work at the sharp edge of real‑time video processing and model inference. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving tough, low‑level systems problems just as much as shaping higher‑level tooling and infrastructure.
If you’re comfortable thinking about latency, memory, data integrity, and you don’t flinch at opening a hex editor, this will feel like home.
Why this role?
The team is building one of the world’s most advanced Video Intelligence Platforms, combining real‑time alerting with AI‑driven post‑event analysis to dramatically reduce video search times.
Their technology is already making a real‑world impact across law enforcement, retail, transport, and smart cities, helping improve safety and efficiency for millions of Australians.
You’ll be joining a small, highly skilled team working on genuinely hard problems. This means real ownership, a strong voice in technical decisions, and the satisfaction of seeing your ideas make it into production.
About the Role
You’ll join the Machine Learning team, focusing on the design, development, and optimisation of a real‑time computer‑vision pipeline written primarily in Rust (with some C++).
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning and evolving a real‑time video processing and inference pipeline built on GStreamer
- Building custom GStreamer plugins using Rust bindings for pre‑ and post‑model processing
- Designing benchmarking, profiling, and visualisation tools (Rust, Docker, Kubernetes)
- Researching and evaluating new ML models and inference execution approaches
- Maintaining CI pipelines across GStreamer and DeepStream releases
- Designing and optimising camera‑to‑GPU/CPU data pipelines to minimise latency and maximise data integrity
- Collaborating closely with MLOps engineers to integrate recent models into production
What I’m Looking For
- 5+ years’ experience in Rust, C, or C++
- A strong track record building low‑latency, highly reliable systems
- Solid experience with Docker (Kubernetes is a bonus)
- Confidence using debugging and performance tools such as GDB, Valgrind, and perf
- A self‑directed problem solver who enjoys learning new technologies
Nice to Have (But Not Essential)
- Hands‑on experience with GStreamer (DeepStream experience is a standout)
- Work with NVIDIA Jetson or other embedded systems
- Experience using GPU APIs such as CUDA, WebGPU, or WebGL
