**Volunteer Child Safety & Safeguarding Coordinator**

Rethink Australia Foundation Ltd is a youth-led environmental organisation empowering students and schools to drive sustainability through education, technology and community action.

As Rethink Australia develops its school programs and youth engagement, we are seeking a Child Safety & Safeguarding Coordinator to help strengthen our child-safe systems, policies and practices.

The volunteer will support the organisation to identify safeguarding risks, develop practical controls and embed child safety across program design, recruitment, training, communications and online and in-person activities. This is a hands-on role working with organisational leadership and relevant volunteers. It does not carry sole responsibility for child safety, statutory reporting decisions or legal advice.

**Key responsibilities**

• Review current and proposed activities against the NSW Child Safe Standards and recognised safeguarding principles

• Help develop and maintain a child safety and wellbeing policy, code of conduct and practical procedures

• Support child-safe recruitment, screening, induction and supervision processes for volunteers

• Develop clear guidance on professional boundaries, acceptable conduct and interactions with children and young people

• Help establish accessible processes for raising, recording, escalating and responding to concerns or complaints

• Support risk assessments for school programs, events, online activities, communications, photography and use of participant information

• Advise on safe digital engagement, consent and appropriate communication channels

• Help create child-friendly and family-accessible safeguarding information

• Support consultation that enables children, young people, families and schools to contribute to safe program design

• Develop safeguarding induction materials, checklists and training resources

• Help maintain appropriate and confidential safeguarding records

• Support regular review, incident learning and continuous improvement

• Work with leadership, People & Culture,



School Programs and Operations volunteers to embed safeguarding responsibilities

• Escalate concerns promptly through approved internal and external reporting pathways

**About you**

We are seeking a skilled and dependable volunteer with professional or substantial practical experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Child safety or organisational safeguarding

• Education, youth or community services

• Child-safe governance, policy or risk management

• Safeguarding training or implementation

• Complaints, incident management or professional standards

• Volunteer screening and child-safe recruitment

Experience applying the NSW Child Safe Standards or developing safeguarding systems for schools, charities, youth organisations, community programs or other child-related organisations will be highly regarded.

You should be able to translate safeguarding principles into clear, proportionate and workable policies and practices. Strong judgement, discretion, written communication and the ability to handle sensitive information appropriately are essential.

A current NSW Working with Children Check is required before undertaking child-related duties. Relevant qualifications or training in safeguarding, education, social work, community services, law, governance or risk will be valued.

This role does not provide counselling, conduct independent investigations, determine criminal matters or replace the safeguarding responsibilities of Rethink Australia’s board, leadership or program leads.

The role is primarily remote and flexible around professional commitments. Some weekday availability may be needed for discussions with schools or program stakeholders. An initial engagement of up to six months is anticipated, requiring approximately two to four hours per week.

The role will include an organisational induction, scheduled online discussions, independent policy and risk work, and collaboration with leadership and program volunteers. Scheduling is flexible, although some weekday availability may be required for discussions involving schools or program stakeholders.

** Training **
A comprehensive induction will be provided covering Rethink Australia’s mission, programs, planned school and youth engagement, organisational structure and current safeguarding arrangements. The volunteer will receive access to relevant policies, program information, risk documentation and existing internal processes. Appropriate guidance will be provided on confidentiality, escalation pathways, approval authority and the boundaries of the role.
