What if your next role wasn't just running a Data Centre, but building the team that will define its success?

Summary

STACK is seeking an experienced Critical Operations Director to establish and lead the Operations function for its Melbourne data centre campus. Reporting to the VP Critical Operations (Aust), this role has end-to-end accountability for site safety, operational readiness, reliability, customer service and the performance of all mission‑critical mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire life safety, controls and base‑building systems.

This is a senior people leadership role for a proven leader who has successfully managed 100+ employees, including managers, supervisors and frontline technical teams. The Director will recruit, develop and lead the Operations team, work collaboratively across STACK, build trusted customer relationships and create an inclusive, accountable and high‑performing culture. All Critical Operations staff report through this role.

Candidates may come from data centres or other complex mission‑critical environments, including Defence, naval operations, aviation, utilities, power generation, transport, healthcare or large‑scale industrial operations. Direct data‑centre experience is advantageous but is not essential where the candidate can demonstrate leadership of large technical workforces, operational readiness, asset reliability and incident command in a high‑consequence 24/7 environment.

This role directly supports STACK’s commitment to 100% uptime and a concierge‑level customer service experience, ensuring risk is proactively managed, planned works are executed safely, and customer communications are clear, timely and professional.

What You'll Be Responsible For

Build the Melbourne campus Operations function from day one, including workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, retention, succession planning and capability development for a 100+ person team.

Lead through managers and supervisors while remaining connected to frontline teams, setting clear priorities, performance expectations and consistent standards across every shift.

Own operational readiness, safety, uptime, reliability and day‑to‑day performance across mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire life safety, controls and base‑building systems.

Govern preventive and predictive maintenance, critical procedures, planned works and live‑site change to protect Mission Critical operations during construction, commissioning and ongoing service.

Lead decisions during incidents, emergencies and abnormal conditions, including customer communication, root‑cause analysis and corrective‑action follow‑through.

Use CMMS, EPMS and BMS insights to manage asset performance, capacity, efficiency and operational risk.

Partner across Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, Security, Commercial, Customer, Finance and Procurement to deliver coordinated campus outcomes.

Build trusted customer relationships and lead vendor performance, service contracts, procurement, CAPEX, OPEX, audits and compliance.

Maintain on‑call availability and provide senior leadership during significant operational events.

What You'll Bring

Proven senior people leadership of 100+ employees, including managers, supervisors and frontline technical teams in a complex 24/7 environment.

A strong record of recruiting, coaching, developing and retaining high‑performing technical teams,

with disciplined succession and performance management.

Sound technical judgement across mechanical, electrical, controls, fire life safety and facilities systems, together with robust operational risk and incident‑command capability.

Demonstrated success partnering across functions, influencing senior stakeholders and building trusted customer relationships during planned works, incidents and escalations.

Experience managing maintenance, vendors, complex projects, customer commitments, service‑level obligations and significant site budgets.

Direct Data Centre experience is highly regarded but not essential where you have led Mission Critical operations in sectors such as pharmaceutical manufacturing, oil and gas, power generation or aviation.

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Business or a related discipline, or equivalent military, operational or professional experience, is preferred. Senior Defence leadership experience is highly regarded.

Full Australian working rights, the ability to pass background checks and attain and maintain NV1 security clearance where required, and willingness to support after‑hours and on‑call operations.
