Technical Project Manager / Project Engineer - Product Development
Location: Sydney, NSW
Salary: $140,000 - 200,000 + Super + ESOP
Depending on experience and skillset
Must have R&D; hardware exposure - Electronics/Mechanical/Mechatronics
About the Role
We are looking for a Technical Project Manager / Project Engineer to join a quick paced R&D; driven product development team. This role sits at the intersection of engineering and delivery. You will act as the scrum master and driving force behind our product development process, keeping technical work on track while also owning the communication, reporting, and operational threads that connect the engineering floor to stakeholders and upper management.
This is a hybrid role. You need to be technical enough to understand engineering timelines, dependencies, and risks, and equally comfortable translating that into clear reports and updates for non technical audiences.
Key Responsibilities
Project and Delivery Management
- Own the day to day running of product development projects, tracking milestones, dependencies, and critical path items
- Facilitate agile ceremonies (standups, sprint planning, retrospectives) and act as scrum master for the engineering team
- Identify schedule risks early and work with engineering leads to resolve blockers before they impact delivery
- Maintain project plans, timelines, and resourcing schedules across concurrent workstreams
Technical Coordination
- Understand the technical scope of R&D; projects well enough to sanity check timelines, flag unrealistic estimates, and ask the right engineering questions
- Work closely with engineers and technical leads to translate complex technical work into digestible milestones and deliverables
- Support technical decision making by keeping documentation, specifications, and change logs current
Reporting and Stakeholder Management
- Prepare and deliver regular status reports, project dashboards,
and executive summaries for upper management
- Act as the primary point of contact between the engineering team and internal or external stakeholders
- Communicate risks, delays, and trade offs clearly and proactively, without sugarcoating or overpromising
- Prepare materials for and participate in leadership and steering committee meetings
Operational Support
- Manage project related administration including budgets, procurement requests, and vendor coordination where relevant
- Maintain process documentation and continuously improve team workflows and ways of working
- Support onboarding of new team members into project processes and tools
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience managing technical or engineering projects within a hardware product development environment, spanning both electronics and mechanical engineering disciplines
- Strong working knowledge of agile methodologies, with hands on experience as a scrum master or equivalent
- Comfortable reading technical documentation and having substantive conversations with engineers about design, timelines, and trade offs
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adjust tone and detail for different audiences from engineers to executives
- Highly organised, with the ability to juggle multiple projects and shifting priorities in a fast moving environment
- A calm, solutions focused approach under pressure and ambiguity, common in early stage or rapidly scaling R&D; settings
- Experience with project management tools (e.g. Jira, Asana, Monday, or similar) and reporting/documentation tools
Nice to Have
- Degree or qualification in electrical/electronics, mechanical, or mechatronics engineering
- Experience in a startup or scale up environment where processes are still being built
- Hands on exposure to prototyping, testing, or manufacturing processes
- PMP, PRINCE2, or Certified Scrum Master (CSM) certification
