ABOUT NAAFLS

NAAFLS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) and independent Family Violence Prevention Legal Service (FVPLS). We are the only victim-based Aboriginal legal service in remote communities in the Top End region of the NT.

We have offices in Darwin (Larrakia land), Katherine (Jawoyn, Dagoman and Wardaman land) and Nhulunbuy (Yolŋu land), and service over 40 remote communities within the Top End region spanning from the Tiwi Islands down to Lajamanu, Wadeye and across to Borroloola. We provide culturally sensitive legal advice, assistance, representation, and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Top End communities who have experienced domestic, family, and sexual violence.

We offer the unique opportunity to work collaboratively alongside client support officers and case workers,

which are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identified roles, to ensure that our service is culturally safe and holistic. This holistic and culturally appropriate model of service sets us apart, seeking practical community-based solutions to the most complex legal problems.

Our primary practice areas are family law, child protection, and domestic violence; though we frequently intervene in coronial inquiries, parliamentary inquiries, and other administrative or criminal proceedings as required.

ROLE OVERVIEW

NAAFLS is leading the delivery of the Leaving Violence Program – Top End Regional Trial and we are looking for experienced case workers to deliver culturally safe supports to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing family violence.

The NAAFLS Leaving Violence Program will provide Indigenous people across the Top End with better access to practical and financial support to leave family violence. Our program will be culturally responsive to empower people to develop their own plans to leave violence safely. The NAAFLS-led Top End Regional trial forms part of a national expansion of the Leaving Violence Program with trials run concurrently in Cairns, Broome and Dubbo.

This role involves working within the LVP team to deliver culturally appropriate support and services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients within the Leaving Violence Program. It requires solid communication skills, cultural knowledge, and the ability to work in a trauma informed and strength-based way to support program participants to develop plans to leave violence safely.

- Complete risk and safety assessments to determine eligibility for the program and identify other referral and support needs.

- Offer culturally sensitive support and information to clients, respecting their cultural needs and background.

- Help clients create safety and support plans within the LVP framework,

ensuring their safety and wellbeing are prioritised.

- Support clients to achieve goals identified in their safety and support plans, including spending the LVP financial packages in a safe and responsible way.

- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and input data into NAAFLS’ electronic systems in a timely and organised manner.

- Provide feedback on the continuous improvement of internal processes and procedures to ensure consistent, effective service delivery to clients.

- Support a safe working workplace by adhering to and promoting NAAFLS’ Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S;) policies and procedures.

- Build and maintain strong relationships with community stakeholders, enhancing collaboration and service outreach.

- Actively engage in regular file review meetings, ensuring case progress and compliance with NAAFLS’ policies and procedures.

- Engage in professional development and training in consultation with the Senior Case Worker.

- Undertake regular travel to remote communities in the Top End.

- Undertake other duties as reasonably directed.
