Perth
- Achieve meaningful outcomes for the WA’s resource and automotive sectors
- Collaborative and supportive team environment
- CBD-based with modern work environment
The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA (CME) is seeking an experienced and dynamic professional to join our team as an Industry Engagement Advisor – Mining and Automotive Training Council (MATC).
About the Opportunity
This is a role for someone who enjoys getting out and talking to industry – and is equally comfortable turning those conversations into meaningful insights, advice and high-quality written outputs.
As the Industry Engagement Advisor, you will support the Manager – MATC to deliver strategic workforce development and training advice across Western Australia’s mining and automotive sectors. A significant part of your role will be spent engaging directly with industry. You will visit workplaces and industry sites, meet with employers and other stakeholders, attend industry events and build trusted relationships across the sectors.
Through these conversations, you will develop a first-hand understanding of workforce challenges, skills needs, emerging issues and opportunities.
Importantly, you will then need to make sense of what you hear. You will capture and analyse industry intelligence, identify common themes and emerging issues, and translate your findings into clear, accurate and high-quality written outputs. This intelligence is used to inform workforce development priorities and initiatives, government reporting and policy development.
As a guide, the role has a strong balance between industry engagement and written analysis – approximately three days each week will be focused on engaging with stakeholders and gathering industry intelligence, with the remaining two focused on analysing, documenting and translating those insights into meaningful written outputs. Regular travel and driving are an important part of the role, with frequent visits to stakeholder workplaces and industry sites across metropolitan Perth, as well as periodic regional travel across Western Australia.
This position is offered as a three-year fixed-term contract, with the potential for extension.
About the MATC The MATC is part of a network of eight industry advisory bodies and covers the mining and automotive sectors. It is run by the CME with funding from the Department of Training and Workforce Development (DTWD). The MATC engages in extensive and targeted consultation with industry stakeholders from the resources and automotive sectors, training providers, unions, and government agencies on workforce developments needs and priorities.
Its core purpose is to provide strategic, future-focused and evidence-based advice on matters relating to the vocational education and training (VET) system’s capacity to support current and future workforce needs required to sustain WA’s economic growth, diversification and development to the State Training Board, State Government and the broader CME team.
About CME The CME is the leading advocate for the resources sector in Western Australia. It is a member-funded, not-for-profit organisation that represents the views of its members, and advocates on their behalf. CME leads policy development on issues impacting the sector. Find out more about us by visiting our website at https://www.cmewa.com.au/.
What will you be doing?
- Support the Manager – MATC in delivering high-quality advice and identifying and recommending specific workforce development strategies.
- Build trusted relationships across the mining and automotive sectors, engaging regularly with employers, industry bodies, government and other key stakeholders.
- Get out into industry through workplace and site visits, stakeholder meetings and industry events to understand workforce challenges, skills needs and emerging opportunities.
- Gather, analyse and synthesise industry intelligence and research to identify key workforce themes, issues and opportunities.
- Translate industry insights into transparent, high-quality reports, briefings, engagement summaries and other written outputs that inform reporting, advice and workforce development initiatives.
- Maintain meaningful records of stakeholder engagements and industry intelligence in the CRM to support information sharing, analysis, reporting and future initiatives.
- Assist with advocacy and support responses to workforce development and skills requests and issues from the State Training Board, DTWD, other government agencies, and national skills organisations.
- Contribute to MATC and CME workforce development priorities, advisory and working groups, government responses and policy initiatives.
- Assist with providing subject matter expert advice to the broader CME policy team to support the development of relevant CME submissions and policy positions.
- Coordinate the administration of the MATC Advisory Board and CME’s Skills and Training Reference Group, to support information sharing and discussion.
- Represent CME and the MATC at relevant forums, industry events, and public engagements to promote the MATC’s and CME’s profile, contribution, and reputation to workforce development and industry.
- Undertake travel as required, including regional site visits to represent the MATC and CME and strengthen stakeholder relationships.
What are we looking for in you?
You need to be a natural, credible industry engager, but also a strong writer and analytical thinker. You will be comfortable meeting people from across the mining and automotive sectors, building rapport and asking thoughtful questions that get beyond the surface to uncover meaningful information.
Just as importantly, you will be able to come back from those conversations, identify what matters and turn that information into concise, insightful and professional written outputs.
You will bring
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills, with the confidence to engage credibly across the mining and automotive sectors.
- Current working knowledge of Australia’s VET system is highly desirable.
- Experience relevant to the WA resources and/or automotive sectors is desired but not essential.
- Experience delivering and implementing training programs is desired but not essential.
- Excellent consultation, questioning and listening skills, with an ability to draw out meaningful industry insights.
- Strong research, analytical and written communication skills, including the ability to synthesise stakeholder intelligence and research into clear, concise and high-quality written documentation.
- A proactive, self-motivated approach and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- A valid WA driver’s licence.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
- Commitment to CME core values of Accountable, Engaged, Inclusive, Integrity, and Respect.
