Primary Objective
Reporting to the Head of Operations – WA (north west), the Senior Project Manager is responsible for the safe, compliant and commercially successful delivery of assigned projects across the Pilbara. The position provides hands-on leadership across the full project lifecycle, including tender handover, planning, mobilisation, execution, commissioning, handover and close-out.
The Senior Project Manager is accountable for all general project management functions, including health and safety, scope, schedule, cost, commercial management, quality, risk, resourcing, client engagement, reporting and compliance. A key focus of the role is driving project performance through disciplined planning, effective management of Primavera P6 schedules, strong financial and commercial controls, and accurate and timely project reporting.
The position is based in Perth but will operate predominantly from project sites across the Pilbara.
Principal Duties/Responsibilities
Project Leadership and Delivery
- Lead the planning, mobilisation, execution and close-out of assigned projects.
- Extensive experience delivering shutdowns for a contractor (balance machines would be highly regarded)
- Take overall accountability for the safe, timely, compliant and commercially successful delivery of projects.
- Develop and implement project execution plans that clearly define scope, deliverables, responsibilities, milestones and performance expectations.
- Ensure project objectives are aligned with Company requirements, contractual obligations and client expectations.
- Coordinate project resources, subcontractors, suppliers and internal support functions.
- Provide visible, hands-on leadership across site-based project activities.
- Monitor project performance and take timely corrective action where delivery is not meeting agreed expectations.
- Identify constraints and implement recovery strategies to protect project milestones and commercial outcomes.
- Manage commissioning, handover, completion documentation, demobilisation and project close-out activities.
- Conduct post-project reviews and ensure lessons learned are captured and applied to future projects.
Primavera P6 Planning and Scheduling
- Demonstrate a strong practical understanding of Primavera P6 and its application to project planning, execution and reporting.
- Take ownership of driving the project schedule in collaboration with planners, engineers, supervisors, subcontractors and client representatives.
- Ensure P6 schedules accurately reflect the approved scope, execution methodology, resource requirements, contractual milestones and project priorities.
- Review and challenge schedule logic, sequencing, activity durations, constraints and productivity assumptions.
- Monitor the critical path, key milestones, float and emerging schedule risks.
- Ensure project progress is accurately measured, verified and incorporated into schedule updates.
- Lead weekly and monthly schedule reviews with the project team and client.
- Drive the development and implementation of short-term look-ahead schedules.
- Develop recovery, acceleration and mitigation plans where schedule performance is behind target or at risk.
- Ensure P6 schedules are aligned with cost forecasts, resource plans, procurement activities and client reporting requirements.
- Clearly communicate schedule priorities and required actions to the project team.
Financial Management
- Maintain accountability for the financial performance of assigned projects.
- Develop, manage and regularly review project budgets, forecasts, cash flow and cost-to-complete assessments.
- Monitor actual and committed expenditure, revenue, earned value, productivity, margin and overall project performance.
- Ensure financial forecasts are accurate, evidence-based and submitted within required reporting timeframes.
- Review cost performance against budget and implement corrective actions where adverse trends are identified.
- Ensure labour, plant, materials, subcontractor and overhead costs are effectively controlled.
- Work closely with the finance and commercial teams to ensure accurate revenue recognition, cost allocation and financial reporting.
- Identify opportunities to improve productivity, reduce costs and maximise project returns.
- Commercial and Contract Management
- Manage the commercial and contractual requirements of assigned projects.
- Maintain a transparent understanding of the head contract, scope, deliverables, exclusions, qualifications and commercial obligations.
- Manage subcontractor and supplier agreements in accordance with Company procedures and project requirements.
- Identify, document and manage variations, claims, extensions of time and changes in scope.
- Ensure contractual notices and commercial correspondence are prepared and issued within required timeframes.
- Maintain accurate variation, claims and commercial registers.
- Review and approve subcontractor progress claims and supplier invoices in accordance with delegated authority.
- Work closely with commercial, operational and legal personnel to protect the Company’s contractual and financial position.
- Support the timely resolution of commercial disputes and outstanding claims.
- Ensure all commercial decisions and commitments comply with the Company’s Delegation of Authority.
Project Reporting and Compliance
- Prepare and submit accurate weekly and monthly project reports.
- Report on health and safety, schedule, cost, commercial performance, productivity, quality, risk, resources and emerging issues.
- Ensure project reporting complies with Company, client and contractual requirements.
- Maintain accurate, complete and auditable project records.
- Ensure forecasts, schedules and progress reports are consistent and supported by reliable project data.
- Escalate material risks, delays, commercial issues and decisions to the Head of Operations in a timely manner.
- Implement and maintain effective project governance, assurance and document-control processes.
- Participate in internal and client audits, reviews and assurance activities.
- Ensure audit findings, corrective actions and compliance obligations are managed through to completion.
- Ensure project activities comply with applicable legislation,
industry standards, client requirements and Company policies and procedures.
- Client and Stakeholder Management
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with client representatives.
- Act as the senior Company point of contact for assigned projects.
- Operate effectively within each client’s project delivery systems, standards, procedures and reporting frameworks.
- Facilitate effective communication between site teams, clients, subcontractors, regional operations and corporate support functions.
- Manage client expectations and promptly address issues that may affect project delivery or the commercial relationship.
- Represent the Company at project meetings, schedule reviews, commercial reviews and stakeholder engagements.
- Prepare and deliver clear presentations and project updates to clients and senior management.
- Support tender submissions, project proposals, constructability reviews and execution strategies when required.
Knowledge And Experience Required
- Minimum of 10 years’ project management experience within the mining, resources, construction, energy or oil and gas sectors.
- Demonstrated experience in a Senior Project Manager or equivalent site-based project leadership position.
- Proven experience delivering projects within a tier one operating environment.
- Strong understanding of tier one project systems, standards, governance requirements, site expectations and reporting frameworks.
- Significant experience delivering projects in remote or regional locations, preferably within the Pilbara.
- Demonstrated ability to understand, review and drive Primavera P6 project schedules.
- Strong understanding of schedule logic, critical-path analysis, progress measurement, look-ahead planning and schedule recovery.
- Proven experience managing project budgets, forecasts, cash flow, cost-to-complete reporting, revenue and margin performance.
- Strong commercial experience, including contract administration, subcontractor management, variations, claims and extensions of time.
- Demonstrated experience preparing accurate project reports and maintaining compliance with Company, client and contractual reporting requirements.
- Comprehensive understanding of the complete project lifecycle, including planning, mobilisation, execution, commissioning, handover and close-out.
- Proven ability to manage project safety, scope, schedule, cost, quality, commercial performance and risk.
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing multidisciplinary, site-based project teams.
- Strong client relationship, stakeholder management, communication and negotiation skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and respond effectively to changing project conditions.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly and work from Pilbara project sites as required.
Education and Qualifications Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management or a related discipline.
- Professional project management certification, such as PMP, PRINCE2 or an equivalent qualification, is highly desirable.
- Relevant construction, safety and site-based qualifications are desirable.
- Current Australian driver’s license.
