Primary objective To act and provide forensic liaison and consultation to and between courts, prison, justice departments, mental health, police,

government and community agencies on mental health matters and the management of associated problems within the identified agency.

Context statement

Working within a multidisciplinary Forensic Mental Health Team, provide liaison and consultation to judiciary services; utilise clinical and legal knowledge skills to provide assessment and high level written and forensic oral testimony inclusive of mental state and immediate treatment needs, for those persons identified within the justice system as having mental health problems.

Key duties and responsibilities

- Apply specialist knowledge, skills, attributes and abilities within a defined practice area in therapeutic and professional relationships with individuals, as well as with families, groups and communities.
- Is recognised by the team for their expertise, is a resource for others, and engages in agreed independent practice under the supervision and management of the team.
- Accountable for providing sound professional advice and for assessment, planning, review, evaluation and coordination of comprehensive client care and/or case management within the speciality area.
- Demonstrate NTH values - safe; responsive; kind – in all decision-making and interactions with consumers and colleagues.
- Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

Selection criteria

Essential

- Meet Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) requirements to practice as a Psychologist, Mental Health

Nurse or Occupational Therapist and/or meet criteria as a qualified Social Worker for full membership of the Australian

Association of Social Workers.

- Demonstrated highly developed clinical knowledge and skills relating to this vacancy, supporting well developed clinical decision-making and problem solving to achieve best practice healthcare outcomes with the capacity to recognise and deal effectively with the tensions inherent in dealing with clients who may pose a danger to others (e.g., confidentiality versus disclosure) and sound knowledge of, and competence in, clinical risk-assessment and risk-management.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, carers and other professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Capacity to provide high standard written and oral testimony regarding clients’ current mental state and immediate treatment needs.
- Hold a current Northern Territory (NT) driver’s licence or have the ability to obtain.

Desirable

- Postgraduate mental health qualifications appropriate to the service area.
