About us

The Institute of Mine Seismology (IMS) is a leader in providing seismic monitoring solutions that improve the safety and risk management of mining operations worldwide. We deliver products and services in 44 countries with offices in Australia, Canada and South Africa.

About the role

We're looking for a talented software developer with strong Java skills to join our Hobart team. You'll work on tools that help mines around the world analyse and interpret seismic data. Most of our projects are Java-based, so we need someone who enjoys solving problems and writing clean, reliable code.

The work spans both server-side and client-side development - from building APIs and back-end services that process seismic datasets, to creating intuitive user interfaces that present real-time results. The role also includes occasional domestic and international travel to mine sites.

What you'll be doing

- Designing and developing back-end services and APIs

- Expanding and improving customer-facing software (web and desktop)

- Presenting real-time seismological results in creative, intuitive ways

What we're looking for

- Degree in Computer Science (or equivalent)

- Proficiency in Java (essential) - most of our projects are Java-based

- Solid UI development skills: HTML, CSS, JavaScript and frameworks (React, Angular, Vue, etc.)

- Understanding of RESTful APIs and web application security

- Ability to contribute to server-side development (APIs, data processing, integration) as part of our core Java projects

- Strong teamwork and communication skills

- Keen attention to detail and a focus on delivering high-quality work

We'd prefer you to have around 2+ years of industry experience, although we're also open to strong graduates or highly experienced developers.

We value curiosity and the use of modern tools (including AI), but we're looking for developers who can write and reason through their own code. AI should complement your skills, not replace them.

Nice to have

- Experience with AWS or Google Cloud Platform

- Familiarity with Docker/Kubernetes

- Knowledge of Unix/Linux operating systems

Why join us?

- Work on projects that make mining safer in over 44 countries

- Be part of a small, collaborative team where your work has a visible impact

- Enjoy variety: from server-side data processing to customer-facing interfaces

- Based in Kingston, just south of Hobart - enjoy Tasmania's great lifestyle while working on global projects

- Occasional opportunities for travel to mines worldwide

To apply

Please submit your resume and a cover letter detailing your relevant experience and why you are a good fit for this role.

Join IMS and help us advance safety technology in the mining industry!
