Employment Opportunity

The Attorney-General’s Department (AGD) is seeking an organised and enthusiastic APS 5 Cabinet Liaison Officer to join the Cabinet Section within the Strategy and Governance Branch.

The department's ability to influence government policy proposals is fundamental to our role in improving Australia's law and justice system, upholding the rule of law and supporting the Attorney-General as First Law Officer. Our engagement with the Cabinet process, where the most significant government decisions are made, is key to our ability to influence.

Cabinet Liaison Officers (CLO) are responsible for coordinating and managing the department's Cabinet priorities and engagement. Working in a rapid-paced environment, CLO’s play a key role to provide strategic support to the Attorney-General and Secretary to attend Cabinet and Committee meetings (including the National Security Committee and Expenditure Review Committee). CLOs also provide support to the department’s policy areas to progress Cabinet submissions, comments and other critical work.

As a CLO your responsibilities will include:

- Engaging across the Commonwealth and the department to prepare, support and deliver briefing on Cabinet items to the Attorney-General, Secretary and senior executives
- Coordinating critical Cabinet work across the department, including providing strategic support and guidance to line areas in the department when drafting and lodging Cabinet Submissions
- Working with your supervisor and the Director Cabinet Section, and departmental line areas, to consolidate Cabinet comments and ensure they represent the whole-of-department view
- Supporting the delivery of new business processes and a comprehensive training and education package to uplift the department's Cabinet knowledge and capability

- Leading on administrative tasks to facilitate meetings with the Secretary and other senior executives, and to manage the day-to-day operations of the Cabinet Team

How you can help us make a difference

Cabinet Liaison Officers perform a critical business function, may be rostered to occasionally work irregular hours, particularly during peak periods (e.g. Budget and MYEFO). Irregular work (such as on weekends and out of normal business hours) is covered by the department’s restriction and overtime provisions in the Attorney-General’s Department Enterprise Agreement 2024.

We are seeking people who are looking to work at the centre of the government’s decision-making processes. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to engage directly with the Attorney-General's Office, Secretary's Office and senior executives.

We are seeking someone who:

- Communicates clearly and confidently with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Thrives in a fast-paced environment and can manage competing priorities.
- Demonstrates sound judgement, attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
- Enjoys building productive working relationships and collaborating across teams.

We are seeking applications from those officers that are interested and keen to support the department's Cabinet work, and with the skills and experiences to fulfill the role as outlined above. We would also encourage applicants to detail in their statement of claims why they are interested in the role and what they are looking to get out of it.

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment at the Attorney-General’s Department applicants must be Australian citizens.

Applicants offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a police record check and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a specified clearance level. The successful applicant must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information.

Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.
