Position Purpose

The Perth Exacerbation Research Group in Institute for Respiratory Health is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated research assistant to join the team. The overall research focus of the group is on conducting clinical research to understand lung disease exacerbations better. The Perth Exacerbation Research Group is undertaking a wide range of studies, covering epidemiological, cohort studies, target trials, randomised controlled trials and qualitative research. The successful candidate will join the team to support a range of research projects within the team, including coordinating collaborative projects from initiation and recruitment through to data collection and management. The role will also involve managing databases and assisting with data cleaning and analysis as well as general research administration. These studies will build on an established program of research and will involve being part of the wider AirWAys research group at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and the Institute for Respiratory Health. Dr Sanjay Ramakrishnan and his team are based in the purpose-built Harry Perkins Research building, situated on the QEII medical health campus in Nedlands.

Key Responsibilities / Duties

1. Running respiratory function testing as part of various research studies.

2. Collection of relevant data using research questionnaires and other relevant tools.

3. Preliminary reporting of research results.

4. Assist with / undertake ethics applications and amendments.

5. Assist with / undertake manuscript preparation.

6. Prepare presentations and conference posters.

7. Conduct background research as required.

8. Literature review of specific topics.

9. Creation of databases and data dictionaries.

10. Ensuring reliability of data within the databases.

11. Checking, cleaning, and coding datasets.

12. Manipulation and analysis of data, including merging datasets.

13.



Maintaining records for trials and studies according to GCP guidelines.

14. Consenting participants into research, in line with ethical principles of GCP.

15. Storage and dissemination of confidential data in line with GCP guidelines.

16. Working cohesively and collaboratively with others – both internal (direct team members) and external (other institute staff, collaborators, and members of the clinical team).

Selection Criteria

Essential

1. BSc (Hons) in biomedical science, health sciences, or a relative discipline.

2. Competency in a range of computing skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases internet, reference managers, and email.

3. Writing skills, including capacity to summarize and communicate technical/clinical concepts in a transparent and concise manner.

4. Highly developed organisation skills with the demonstrated ability to manage data and meet deadlines.

5. Self-management and high personal motivation.

6. Excellent organization and communication skills.

7. Ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic disciplines and cultural backgrounds.

Desirable

1. Interest, experience, and enthusiasm relevant to health service delivery, public health, health policy and advocacy.

2. Interest and experience in research translation, project management, and implementation.

Work Requirements

1. The successful applicant will be required to undertake a criminal record check in accordance with the Institute’s Criminal Record Screening Procedure.

2. Australian citizenship, permanent residency or possession of a valid visa with work entitlement in Australia.
