Project Accountant – Fixed Term Contract
Pacific Marine Group (PMG) is a leading marine contractor operating across Northern Australia and the Pacific, delivering diverse projects across our Marine, Construction, Diving and Maintenance divisions.
As PMG continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced Project Accountant to join our Finance and Commercial team on a fixed-term contract.
This role will work to strengthen and standardise accounting practices across the business, improve the quality and consistency of project financial information, and support the continued development of our financial systems, reporting and processes.
We are looking for someone who combines strong technical accounting capability with a practical understanding of project environments and a genuine interest in continuous improvement, financial systems and smarter ways of working.
About the Role
Working across Finance, Commercial and Operations, you will review existing accounting and project practices, identify opportunities for improvement and help establish more consistent and scalable processes across our projects and wider business.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who is comfortable getting into the detail, understanding how information flows from project operations through to Finance, and working with stakeholders to improve the systems and processes that support it.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Prepare monthly management accounts and supporting financial reports.
Coordinate month-end and year-end close processes, including journals, accruals, prepayments and balance sheet reconciliations.
Provide financial accounting and reporting support across PMG's projects and wider business.
Assist with budgeting, forecasting and cash flow reporting.
Work closely with Project Managers, Commercial and Finance teams to improve the accuracy and consistency of financial information.
Develop consistent project financial reporting and improve visibility of project performance.
Review and standardise accounting practices across different projects and workstreams.
Review existing Finance and project processes to identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy and financial controls.
Support the continued development and optimisation of financial systems, workflows and reporting.
Improve the integration and flow of information between operational, project and financial systems.
Identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary manual processing and improve the quality and accessibility of financial data.
Assist with the development of more efficient reporting and analysis tools.
Establish clear and practical accounting processes, templates and controls that can be consistently applied across projects and the wider business.
Partner with stakeholders across the business to understand financial and operational processes and implement practical improvements.
Work with project teams to strengthen financial understanding, cost management and forecasting disciplines.
Support continuous improvement initiatives across the broader Finance and Commercial function.
Skills & Experience
To be successful in this role, you will ideally possess:
Relevant tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Commerce, Finance or a related discipline.
CPA or CA qualification, or progress towards completion, will be highly regarded.
Previous experience in a Project Accountant, Management Accountant, Financial Accountant or similar commercial finance role.
Strong technical accounting knowledge and understanding of financial reporting requirements.
Experience working within a project-based environment, ideally construction, civil, engineering, mining, marine or a related industry.
Demonstrated experience improving financial processes, reporting or systems.
Strong ERP or accounting systems capability. NetSuite experience will be highly regarded, although experience with other ERP platforms will also be considered.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
Experience with reporting,
data analysis or business intelligence tools such as Power BI or Power Query will be advantageous.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify inconsistencies and develop practical solutions.
Excellent attention to detail with a strong understanding of financial controls.
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to work effectively across Finance and operational teams.
A proactive, solutions-focused approach with a genuine continuous improvement mindset.
What Will Set You Apart
We're particularly interested in someone who is naturally curious about how Finance operates and enjoys finding better ways to get things done.
You may have previously improved financial reporting, standardised processes across multiple projects or business units, helped optimise an ERP system, improved the flow of financial information between systems, or simplified processes that had become unnecessarily manual or inconsistent.
You don't need to be an IT specialist. We're looking for a capable accountant who understands how technology, systems and good process design can support a stronger and more efficient Finance function.
Why Join PMG?
Join a growing North Queensland business operating across Australia and the Pacific.
Take ownership of meaningful accounting, systems and process improvement initiatives.
Work across a diverse portfolio of marine and construction projects.
Partner directly with Finance, Commercial, Project Managers and operational teams.
Opportunity to influence how accounting processes and reporting develop as the business grows.
Diverse and diverse work across multiple business divisions.
Supportive and collaborative team environment.
This fixed-term opportunity will suit an experienced accountant who enjoys getting into the detail, solving problems and improving the systems and processes that sit behind strong financial outcomes.
Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their current resume and cover letter outlining their relevant accounting experience and examples of systems, reporting or process improvements they have contributed to.
