The company:

Our client is a Melbourne-based retailer focused on the Tween/Teen customer. They’re currently undergoing a brand reset and looking to bring some additional freelance design support into the team as they evolve their product offering towards more fashion-led, trend-driven capsules.

The profile we’re looking for:

The existing team has robust graphic design and illustration capability, so we’re specifically looking for freelancers who can complement this with a strong fashion design/product development background and fashion-led design sensibility. Illustration and design skills are still important, as you’ll be creating original prints and patterns, but more essential is fashion-led application.

Ideally, candidates will have experience across fashion, accessories, lifestyle or youth product and demonstrate strong capability in:

- Translating fashion trends and creative direction into commercial product.
- Creating original prints/patterns for fashion application.
- Creating detailed, accurate product spec sheets for suppliers.
- Building cohesive ranges/capsules rather than designing products in isolation
- Strong colour, material, print and pattern curation
- Mixing prints, textures, materials and finishes in a sophisticated, fashion-led way
- Understanding hero vs supporting products and creating light and shade within a range without everything feeling overly matched.
- Strong visual awareness of current fashion, streetwear and youth culture.

- Working from trend/mood boards and translating these into clear product design solutions.
- Bringing a strong fashion point of view while still designing for a commercial customer and price point.

Experience specifically within bags, accessories, lifestyle or other multi-product fashion categories would be particularly valuable.

Candidates will need to be comfortable working in Adobe Illustrator. Experience working with WGSN or other trend platforms would be beneficial but this is not a requirement as the Product Team will be leading in this space, with designers being tasked with interpreting their briefs.

We’re open to a range of seniority levels, but would particularly like to see experienced midweight/senior freelancers who can hit the ground running and bring a different fashion perspective into the studio.

Within portfolios, we’re particularly interested in seeing full ranges or collections, including how you’ve used colour, print, material and product variation across a cohesive capsule, rather than individual graphic or illustration pieces.

The logistics:

This is an initial 1-2 month freelance booking starting ASAP. There’s a solid likelihood of extension and potential conversion into a permanent opportunity, however if freelancers have upcoming bookings later this year and could only commit for a short period this would still be considered.

The studio is based in St Kilda and you’ll be required to work onsite full-time.
