Are you a Registered Nurse with a passion for patient safety, perioperative care, and delivering a positive patient experience? Join Western District Health Service as a Planned Surgery Nurse, where you’ll play a vital role in preparing elective surgery patients for their procedure and supporting safe, efficient patient flow through the operating theatre pathway.

This is a role for someone who values clinical excellence, robust communication, and cooperative practice. Working closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff, patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams, you’ll provide comprehensive pre-operative assessment, patient education, and care coordination to ensure patients are optimally prepared for surgery while helping reduce delays and theatre cancellations.

What You'll Be Doing

As part of our committed surgical services team, you’ll provide safe, coordinated, and patient-centred care across:

Comprehensive Patient Assessment —
Conduct preadmission nursing assessments, including medical and surgical history, current medications, allergies, vital signs, and relevant health conditions to ensure patients are clinically prepared for surgery.

Clinical Risk Identification & Escalation —
Recognise potential clinical risks, changes in health status, complex medical conditions, or complications and ensure appropriate escalation to support safe surgical outcomes.

Preoperative Preparation & Patient Education —
Support patients and their families by providing clear verbal and written information regarding fasting requirements, medication management, investigations, admission processes, procedures, and postoperative expectations.

Medication Review & Clinical Documentation —
Review current medications, identify discrepancies or risks, escalate concerns when required, and maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical documentation within medical records and clinical management systems.

Care Coordination & Multidisciplinary Collaboration —
Work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff, general practitioners, allied health professionals, and other healthcare providers to coordinate investigations, referrals, specialist reviews, and other preoperative requirements.

Patient-Centred Support —
Provide professional, compassionate care while identifying and responding to individual patient needs, including communication, cultural, emotional, mobility,



and discharge planning considerations.

Quality, Safety & Clinical Governance —
Maintain compliance with organisational policies, infection prevention and control requirements, occupational health and safety standards, privacy and confidentiality obligations, while contributing to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

What You Bring

• Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA)
• Demonstrated solid clinical assessment, prioritisation, and time management skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Sound clinical knowledge and judgement with the ability to recognise deterioration, patient complexity, and potential perioperative risks
• Excellent attention to detail and accurate clinical documentation skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals
• A genuine commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centred care
• Ability to coordinate care, manage competing priorities, and support positive patient outcomes
• Commitment to maintaining professional standards, confidentiality, and best practice clinical care
• Dedication to continuous professional development, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives
