With the commencement of Australia's EPBC Act reforms and the establishment of the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) from 1 July ****, demand for high-quality ecological and environmental assessment services is increasing.
We are growing our team to meet this demand and are seeking an experienced Senior Botanist to play a central role in that growth.
Ecologia's project portfolio spans the geographic extent of Western Australia, encompassing pre-mining flora surveys in the Pilbara, vegetation assessments for renewable energy developments across the Wheatbelt and Mid West, threatened ecological community mapping in the Southwest, coastal and infrastructure corridor surveys, urban and peri-urban subdivision assessments in the Perth Metropolitan Region, and long-term rehabilitation monitoring programs at operational and closed mine sites in the Goldfield.
The Senior Botanist role provides genuine exposure to this full range of project types and landscapes.
Responsibilities include:
● Leading flora and vegetation assessments, targeted rare and priority flora surveys, and Threatened Ecological Community (TEC) assessments across Western Australia, from project scoping through to final report delivery
● Preparing and reviewing technical reports to EPA and EPBC standards for regulatory submission, ensuring scientific defensibility and clear communication of findings
● Providing expert advice to clients on State and Commonwealth environmental approval pathways, including under the EP Act, EPBC Act, Mining Act and the new NEPA framework
● Supporting clients in preparing frontloaded ecological studies to meet the December **** deadline under the EPBC Act's streamlined assessment pathway
● Mentoring and supervising junior botanists and ecologists in field survey techniques, data management, technical writing and professional development
● Contributing to project management functions including scope definition, budget management, scheduling and client liaison
● Undertaking GIS spatial analysis, vegetation mapping and spatial data management using ArcGIS and QGIS
● Participating in long-term ecological monitoring and mine rehabilitation programs,



including species diversity and cover surveys and vegetation recovery assessments
● Supporting business development through the preparation of technical proposals and maintenance of client relationships
Ecologia has completed more than 2,000 ecological projects since ****.
The Senior Botanist will contribute to the full range of our projects, which includes:
Pilbara Resources Pre-mining flora and vegetation surveys across spinifex grasslands, gorge communities and rocky ranges for iron ore, lithium, gold and other resource sector projects.
The Pilbara supports a high number of endemic plant taxa and presents some of Australia's most complex vegetation mapping and Priority flora assessment challenges.
Renewables Wind and solar farm environmental assessments across the Pilbara, Kimberley, Wheatbelt and Mid West.
Projects typically involve Priority flora and TEC mapping across cleared agricultural land interspersed with remnant native vegetation of significant ecological value, as well as biodiversity offset design and management.
Southwest Biodiversity Hotspot Flora surveys within the Southwest Region — one of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots, supporting more than 8,000 vascular plant species, of which more than 50 per cent are endemic.
Assessment of TECs, Priority flora and vegetation communities for land development, infrastructure and government projects in this region requires advanced botanical expertise.
Coastal & Infrastructure Corridors Vegetation and flora assessments for coastal infrastructure, port developments, pipeline corridors and linear projects along WA's coastline and inland corridors.
Surveys frequently involve assessment of Tuart woodlands, Banksia woodlands, coastal heath and wetland vegetation communities.
️ Urban & Peri-urban Development Rezoning, subdivision and development application flora surveys across the Perth Metropolitan Region and surrounding growth corridors, including TEC mapping in northern and southern suburban growth areas, Banksia woodland assessments, and ongoing ecological monitoring programs for approved developments.
⚡ Mine Rehabilitation Monitoring Long-term ecological monitoring programs assessing vegetation recovery at operational and post-closure mine sites across the Goldfields, Jarrah Forest, Pilbara and Mid West.
Programs include species diversity and cover assessments, native seedling establishment assessments, weed incursion monitoring and annual reporting to regulatory bodies.
Selection Criteria
● Tertiary qualifications in botany, ecology,



environmental science or a closely related discipline; postgraduate qualifications are well regarded
● A minimum of five years' botanical consulting experience, with Western Australian experience strongly preferred
● Demonstrated proficiency in WA flora identification, with particular expertise in Priority and Threatened flora and solid working knowledge of the flora of one or more of the following regions: Kimberley, Pilbara, Southwest, Wheatbelt and Midwest
● Demonstrated experience in independently designing, leading and reporting detailed flora and vegetation surveys
● Sound knowledge of WA and Commonwealth environmental legislation and approval processes, including the EP Act, EPBC Act, Mining Act and the NEPA framework
● Ability to produce well-structured, scientifically defensible technical reports appropriate for regulatory submission
● Competency in GIS software (ArcGIS and/or QGIS) and spatial data management
● Physical fitness and possession of a C Class current driver's licence (manual licence preferred); willingness to undertake extended remote fieldwork in challenging environmental conditions
● A disciplined and methodical approach to technical work, combined with the capacity to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced consulting setting
● A genuine commitment to achieving positive environmental outcomes through rigorous, evidence-based assessment
The following attributes will be considered favourably:
● Experience with biodiversity offset design, long-term ecological monitoring programs or mine site rehabilitation
● Familiarity with the EPBC Act National Environmental Standards (NES) framework
● Current membership of the Environmental Consultants Association (ECA) or the Setting Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ)

● Competitive remuneration of $105,000 – $125,000 base salary plus 12% superannuation, subject to annual review
