About the Team
Technical Services at UTS support teaching, research, and operational excellence across science, engineering, health, and design disciplines.
Dedicated technical teams manage laboratories, fieldwork logistics, and specialist facilities, while overseeing procurement, asset management, and compliance with safety protocols.
They play a strategic role in enabling high-quality education and research through infrastructure support, risk management, and collaboration with internal stakeholders.
Within the Faculty of Science, Technical Services provides dedicated support for teaching and research laboratories, fieldwork operations, and specialist facilities.
Teams oversee procurement and asset management, ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements, and deliver critical operational support that enables safe, efficient, and innovative scientific activity.
About the Role
The Laboratory Assistant provides essential technical and operational support to ensure the smooth day-today functioning of teaching and research laboratories within the Faculty of Science.
This role is responsible for maintaining laboratory readiness by managing consumables, preparing media and solutions, assisting with the set-up and pack-down of practical classes, and supporting compliance with health, safety, and wellbeing standards.
Working under broad guidelines, the Laboratory Assistant contributes to an efficient, safe, and cooperative laboratory environment that enables high-quality teaching and research outcomes.
We have two full time positions available.




If successful in applying for this role, you will be responsible for:
Maintaining laboratory readiness by managing inventory, ordering standard laboratory consumables, and ensuring laboratories are fully stocked.
Setting up and packing down undergraduate practical classes, preparing equipment, solutions, media, and laboratory materials while ensuring safe and efficient operations.
Supporting laboratory operations by washing and restocking glassware, organising laboratory gowns, operating autoclaves, and managing hazardous waste in accordance with safety procedures.
Coordinating the ordering and safe transport of gas cylinders, cryogenic liquids, solvents, and other laboratory supplies in line with UTS purchasing and safety procedures.
Conducting routine laboratory compliance activities, including testing safety showers and supporting the safe operation and maintenance of laboratory facilities.

Ability to plan and organise work within required timeframes
Comply with standard operating procedures
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including ability to respond to changing circumstances and critical situations.
Experience working in a laboratory and familiarity with laboratory processes.
Experience working with hazardous materials
Remuneration & Benefits
Base Salary Range: $68,131 - $77,672 pa (HEW 3)
This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

These positions are full-time and appointment will be made on a continuing basis.
