Do Psychology Differently
There are plenty of psychology roles that promise flexibility, supervision and varied work.
We think the difference is what those things actually look like once you start.
At Billy Cart Behaviour, you will be trusted to think, question, assess, formulate and practise as a psychologist.
You will not be expected to move clients through standardised programs, apply the same intervention to every person or compromise clinical quality to meet arbitrary productivity targets.
We are looking for a generally registered psychologist to join our Canberra team for a minimum of three days per week.
Psychology will be the primary focus of this role, with opportunities to provide psychological assessment, therapy, consultation and capacity building across a genuinely varied caseload.
If you are interested in Positive Behaviour Support, you may also choose to supplement your psychology caseload with Behaviour Support clients.
This is entirely optional.
You do not need to be a Behaviour Support Practitioner or take on Behaviour Support work to be considered for the position.
Our clients are primarily NDIS participants, with opportunities to also provide private and Medicare-funded psychology services.
We work across the lifespan and support people with diverse developmental, cognitive, psychological, behavioural and functional presentations.
No two days, assessments or clients are quite the same.
About Billy Cart Behaviour
We are not your typical allied health provider.
We laugh loudly, support boldly and genuinely geek out over thoughtful clinical work that creates meaningful change.
Billy Cart Behaviour is a neuroaffirming, trauma-informed and NDIS-registered organisation supporting people with disability, mental health needs, complex trauma and behaviours that may place themselves or others at risk.
We work with people whose lives do not fit neatly within one diagnosis, discipline or service system.
Our clients may be navigating disability services, mental health systems, education, child protection, justice, supported accommodation and complex family environments, sometimes all at once.
We aim to understand the whole person, including their strengths, preferences, relationships, communication, environment and support needs.
Our Canberra team works on Ngunnawal Country from our sensory-friendly office in Bruce.
Services may also be delivered in clients' homes, schools, workplaces and community settings, as well as through telehealth where appropriate.
About the Role
This role is suited to a psychologist who enjoys variety, values clinical autonomy and wants to work with people whose needs may require flexible, individualised and thoughtful approaches.
Psychological assessment knowledge is important.
We complete a range of assessments across the lifespan and work with clients who may have complex developmental, cognitive, mental health, behavioural, forensic or functional presentations.
You will need to be able to select appropriate assessment approaches, integrate information from multiple sources and communicate findings in a way that is clinically sound, accessible and useful.
Depending on your experience, interests and scope of competence, your work may include:
Conducting psychological assessments across the lifespan.
Selecting, administering, scoring and interpreting standardised assessment measures.
Integrating assessment results with developmental history, interviews, observations, records and information provided by families or support teams.
Developing clear biopsychosocial, developmental and behavioural formulations.
Preparing psychological reports, clinical letters and practical recommendations.
Providing evidence-informed psychological therapy and intervention.
Supporting emotional regulation, adjustment, coping, identity, relationships, participation and quality of life.
Providing psychoeducation and capacity building for clients, families and support networks.
Consulting with schools, support providers, allied health professionals, medical practitioners and other services.
Contributing to multidisciplinary assessments and complex clinical discussions.
Delivering services to NDIS, private and Medicare-funded clients.
Your caseload will be developed with consideration of your existing competence, clinical interests and professional development goals.
You will not be expected to work outside your scope or independently manage unfamiliar complexity without consultation.
Optional Positive Behaviour Support Work
Psychologists who want additional caseload variety may choose to include Positive Behaviour Support clients within their role.
This is not compulsory and will not be treated as an unstated expectation after you commence.
If Behaviour Support is of interest, your work may include:
Completing functional behaviour assessments.
Developing integrated psychological and behavioural formulations.
Preparing and reviewing Behaviour Support Plans.
Coaching families and support teams to implement proactive, practical and skill-building strategies.
Supporting communication, autonomy, participation and emotional safety.
Reducing reliance on restrictive practices.
Contributing to complex risk assessment and multidisciplinary planning.
We can provide Behaviour Support mentoring, supervision and support to develop capability under the NDIS Behaviour Support Capability Framework.
What Makes Working at BCB Different?
You Will Be Treated Like a Psychologist
We employ capable clinicians and trust them to use their professional judgement.
You will have genuine autonomy to assess, formulate and develop individualised approaches.
Our templates and resources are designed to support clinical reasoning, not replace it.
We value accountability and sustainable service delivery, but we do not use fear-based management, constant monitoring or unrealistic billing expectations.
Varied Assessment and Clinical Work
Assessment is a meaningful part of our psychology practice.
Our work spans different ages, support needs and presentations, so you will have opportunities to strengthen your assessment, formulation and report-writing skills while completing work that has a practical purpose in the person's life.
You may move between assessment, therapy, consultation, report writing and multidisciplinary collaboration across the week.
The variety is real, and no two days will be the same.
Complex Work With Support Around You
BCB is known for supporting people with complex presentations, but we do not expect clinicians to carry that complexity alone.
You will have access to:
Regular individual supervision.
AHPRA-compliant psychology supervision.
weekly peer supervision and reflective practice.
Senior clinician consultation.
Multidisciplinary problem-solving.
Secondary review for complex reports and clinical matters.
Support with ethical dilemmas, risk and clinical uncertainty.
Behaviour Support mentoring if you choose to work in that area.
You will be trusted to practise independently while knowing that meaningful support is available when the work becomes complicated.
Caseloads Built Around Clinical Fit
Your caseload can be shaped around your experience, interests and development goals.
Areas of work may include neurodevelopmental disability, mental health, psychosocial disability, complex trauma, autism, ADHD, forensic disability, justice involvement, Supported Independent Living, early intervention, risk, safeguarding and multidisciplinary assessment.
We aim to match clients with psychologists who have the appropriate skills, interests and clinical fit, rather than simply assigning work to whoever has space.
Professional Development Beyond Compliance Training
Learning is built into the way we work through internal training, reflective practice, peer consultation, specialist workshops, lunch-and-learn sessions and external professional development funding.
Depending on your interests, you may also have opportunities to:
Develop or deliver training.
Attend or present at conferences.
Contribute to clinical resources and service development.
Participate in research.
Support students or developing clinicians.
Contribute to broader sector initiatives.
These opportunities are intended to support your growth and make use of your strengths.
They are not automatically added to your workload simply because you are capable.
Flexible Work That Remains Connected
You can balance your time across our Canberra office, working from home, community-based appointments and telehealth.
We value genuine flexibility while making sure flexibility does not become professional isolation.
You will remain connected to a real team through supervision, consultation, shared clinical work and the occasional strange lunchtime conversation.
Practical Support That Protects Clinical Time
You will have access to internal administration support, secure clinical systems, a streamlined CRM, adaptable templates, established clinical resources, a work laptop and iPhone, and assistance with scheduling, service agreements and other non-clinical tasks.
We want psychologists spending their time on work that genuinely requires a psychologist.
Recognition With Actual Rewards
Through our staff recognition program, team members can give each other tacos for excellent work, creativity, collaboration, problem-solving or stepping in when someone needs support.
Tacos can be saved and exchanged for rewards, perks and additional privileges.
BCB employees also receive an UpDoc membership, providing free access to online GP consultations and referrals for the employee and up to three family members.
Eligible staff may access a limited number of psychology sessions for support relating to workplace stress or particularly challenging periods.
A Workplace With Personality
Our offices may include dogs, cats, fidget toys, sensory supports, creative resources and unexpectedly passionate discussions about assessment or behaviour analysis over lunch.
We take clinical quality, client rights, safeguarding and professional responsibility seriously.
We simply do not believe serious work requires a joyless workplace.
What You Will Bring
You will need:
General registration as a psychologist with AHPRA.
Availability to work a minimum of three days per week.
Knowledge of contemporary psychological assessment, formulation and intervention.
Experience administering, interpreting or reporting on psychological assessments.
Sound clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Strong written and verbal communication.
The ability to translate assessment findings into practical and accessible recommendations.
Confidence working collaboratively with clients, families, support providers and multidisciplinary teams.
A commitment to ethical, evidence-informed, neuroaffirming, trauma-informed and person-centred practice.
Willingness to reflect, seek consultation and continue developing professionally.
Experience supporting people with disability, neurodevelopmental differences, mental health needs, complex trauma or behaviours of concern will be highly regarded.
Training or experience in approaches such as CBT, ACT, DBT or EMDR Therapy is welcomed but not essential.
Experience in Positive Behaviour Support is also welcomed but is not required.
Mandatory Requirements
The successful applicant must hold or be willing to obtain and maintain:
Eligibility to work in Australia.
General registration with AHPRA as a psychologist.
NDIS Worker Screening Clearance.
ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration.
National Police Check.
A current driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
If you choose to include Behaviour Support within your role, you will also need to meet the relevant NDIS Behaviour Support suitability requirements.
We can support you through this process where appropriate.
Ready to Roll With the Cart?
This role may suit you if you want autonomy without isolation, enjoy assessment and varied clinical work, value meaningful supervision and want the time and support to understand each person properly.
It may also suit you if you appreciate a workplace that can discuss a complex formulation in the morning and award someone a taco for saving the printer in the afternoon.
We are quirky, compassionate and serious about good clinical work.
We actively welcome applications from neurodivergent professionals, First Nations people, people with disability and people with lived experience.
