Think Big.
Build Bigger.
Join Vekta Automation as our next Senior Mechanical Engineer (Automation & Machinery Design) and help bring creative automation solutions to life.
Vekta Automation is a Perth-based industrial automation OEM specialising in the design and manufacture of advanced machinery and systems for the timber frame and truss industry.
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will take the lead on the mechanical design of custom automated equipment, guiding projects from initial concept through to manufacture and commissioning.
This full-time role offers end-to-end ownership of machinery design and delivery in a highly innovative engineering environment.
What we offer:
? Engineering environment with structured peer design reviews and continuous technical feedback.
? Additional leave: One paid day off for your birthday.
? Flexible working arrangements, including adjusted start/finish times.
? Onsite parking provided at our Malaga facility.
Your work includes:
Lead the mechanical design and development of automated industrial machinery from concept, analysis, and detailed design through to manufacture, commissioning, and continuous improvement.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical, controls, software, manufacturing, and service personnel, to conceptualise, design, and deliver integrated automation and mechatronic solutions.
Conduct feasibility studies, engineering assessments, motion analysis, and system performance evaluations to optimise machine functionality, reliability, maintainability, and throughput.
Perform and document engineering calculations to ensure required strength, stiffness, and correct sizing of linear and rotary drive systems and structural frames.
Model and draft machinery in SolidWorks, producing manufacturing-ready drawings.
Contribute to the development, standardisation,
and continuous improvement of machine architectures, design practices, and engineering standards across the product range.
Own and drive the continuous improvement of technical documentation (BOMs, assembly instructions, FAT/SAT manuals, O&M; manuals), ensuring accuracy, completeness, and production readiness aligned with workshop requirements.
Execute prototype testing, validation activities, and root-cause investigations to verify design performance and reliability.
Validate drawings and documentation against production requirements through direct engagement with workshop and manufacturing teams.
Support and mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and coaching while escalating significant technical risks, design decisions, or resource constraints to the Lead Engineer as required.
Provide technical review input and participate in peer design reviews, with final technical approval and design sign-off remaining with the Lead Engineer.
Occasional travel to local, interstate, and international sites (approximately two one-week trips per year), including onsite commissioning as required.
Essential Skills, Experience & Qualifications:
Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) or higher, accredited by Engineers Australia and eligible for Professional Engineer membership.
2–4+ years' post-graduate experience in mechanical design within industrial automation or machinery environments, with exposure to automated machinery, materials handling systems, robotics/gantries, or CNC equipment.
Understanding of mechatronic systems, including servo drives, motion control, sensors, actuators, pneumatics, and industrial automation equipment ((highly regarded)
Demonstrated experience producing full drawing packs to AS****, including BOMs, weld symbols, geometric and dimensional tolerancing, and revision control.
Working knowledge of AS/NZS ****** and its application in machinery design (risk assessment, guarding, safety circuits).
Minimum 2+ years' experience using SolidWorks (or similar) for production design, including assemblies and detailed drawings.
Experience with PDM or revision control systems highly regarded.
Demonstrated application of core mechanical engineering principles in machine design, including structural analysis, load paths, and drive system sizing.
Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities and deliver to deadlines within a quick-paced manufacturing or OEM environment with minimal supervision.
Comfortable taking designs from concept to manufacturing without step-by-step direction
Hands on experience in a manufacturing or servicing scenario (highly regarded but not essential)
