About the opportunity

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be instrumental in shaping and delivering the technical direction for your area. You will tackle complex, ambiguous problems that span multiple squads, designing for long-term simplicity, reliability, and security.

This is a key leadership role to drive our technical strategy and ensure critical IP isretainedwithin Bendigo Bank. This responsibility carries through to working with our partner where you will lead critical initiatives from end-to-end and multiply the impact of engineers and teams around you. Your work will directly influence our technical standards, quality, mentorship practices, andestablishclear technical leadership within theProduct & Customer PlatformsDomain.

In this roleyou ’ ll get to

- Support and complement Principal Engineerswitharchitectural design and technical strategy for our core systems, simplifying complexity and ensuring alignment with enterprise-wide goals.
- Champion and embed engineering best practices in testing, security, and CI/CD to enhance quality and reduce technical debt across our services.
- Mentor and coach engineers, building technical capability within the team through knowledge sharing, design reviews, and fostering a culture of high-quality engineering.




- Collaborate with product and engineering leaders on cross-domain initiatives and represent the engineering perspective in strategic discussions and technical assessments.

Whatyou ’ ll bring to the role

To be successful in the role you will have:

- Led the architecture, design and delivery of complex, cross-team programs with production ownership and have built and operated high-throughput, business-critical services.
- Deepexpertisein software design for distributed systems (APIs, data contracts, storage, concurrency, scalability). Experienceinbanking or fintechwill be beneficial.
- Practical mastery of modern software development practices, including CI/CD, automated and left-shift testing, observability, and safe deployment patterns.
- Experience with reliability engineering (SLOs, error budgets, incident response) and secure-by-design practices.
- A history of mentoring senior engineers and uplifting a team's technical judgment and capability.
- Demonstratedability to influence a range of technology and business stakeholders outside of your immediate team includingPrincipal Engineers,Engineering Managers, Heads of Technology, Product Owners and BSOs.

This is apermanent, full time opportunity and can be locatedat any of ourHead Office locations,



with a preference for Melbourne.
