Senior Legal Counsel – Retirement Product Sydney | Permanent | Full-time (part-time considered)

Looking for genuine variety in your next Senior Legal Counsel role? This position offers broad legal advisory support across multiple business lines – retirement income, insurance and investment management – with a mix of BAU and project work. With 5–10+ years PQE, you'll have real scope to take ownership of matters and grow the role well beyond a standard advisory seat, on a platform built for that kind of development. Based in our Sydney CBD office (5 Martin Place), you'll enjoy hybrid working – 3 days in office, 2 from home.

About the role

This is a senior legal advisory role providing broad support across Challenger's retirement income, insurance, superannuation and investment management businesses – spanning product development, strategic partnerships, regulatory advice and commercial transactions. You'll join a small, high-performing Legal, Product team as Senior Legal Counsel, with the Life Product team as your primary client. It's a genuinely varied role: real exposure to everything happening on the product side, ownership of your own matters, and scope to grow in a diverse, challenging seat. Reporting to the Head of Legal, Product, you'll work on a mix of BAU advisory and project work in a collegiate, autonomous team – with close ties to stakeholders across Product, Distribution, Investments and Risk and Compliance.

What you'll be doing

Provide legal advice on the design, development, distribution and ongoing management of retirement income, annuity, life insurance, superannuation and investment products.

Advise on new product initiatives, strategic partnerships and commercial opportunities, including retirement income solutions developed with superannuation funds, platforms and institutional clients.

Advise on financial services regulation including the Corporations Act,

Life Insurance Act, Insurance Contracts Act, SIS legislation, APRA prudential standards and ASIC requirements – and monitor emerging regulatory developments.

Advise on distribution and marketing matters, including PDS, adviser and platform relationships, licensing, DDO and disclosure obligations.

Draft, negotiate and advise on a broad range of commercial arrangements, including strategic partnerships, distribution, technology, outsourcing and investment management agreements.

Support legal risk management and governance, including regulatory interactions, breach and incident management, and enhancement of legal frameworks and policies.

Build strong relationships with senior business stakeholders across Product, Distribution, Investments, Risk and Compliance, acting as a trusted adviser.

What you'll bring

Approximately 5–10 years PQE, gained in a leading law firm and/or in-house legal function, with experience in Life Insurance, Australian Superannuation Legislation, and APRA regulatory requirements, along with knowledge of annuities or other income stream products.

Strong working knowledge of the Corporations Act, including directors’ duties, related party transactions and trust law.

Demonstrated experience managing legal risk within a corporate or investment workplace.

Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent) and a current Australian practising certificate.
