Principal Environmental Planner (Water focus)

The Strategic Workplace and Planning team is newly formed and has a national focus. It works across regions supporting our established advisory businesses in North and West and South-East Australia. Its goal is to work with Sequana Group's existing clients, establish new client relationships, and generate new business.
Working with our Associate Director, Environment and Planning and the Associate Director, Water and Environment Advisory, the role includes helping to build our environmental and planning capability across the business to establish a more complete project planning and delivery offering within Sequana Group.

What you do
Collaborate with senior management, including Director, Strategic Environment and Planning, and Associate Directors, Environment and Planning, in establishing and implementing a long-term strategic plan for Sequana’s Strategic Environment and Planning team.
Support our internal Water and Energy consultancy teams in relation to developing and implementing environment and planning approval strategic initiatives that align with Sequana Group’s long-term objectives and market opportunities.
Provide commercial leadership by identifying and securing new business opportunities, developing proposals and tenders, and offering clients high-value, practical solutions and unlocking opportunities.
Provide oversight of multi-disciplinary teams to deliver environmental and planning approval projects from concept to completion, ensuring outcomes are delivered on time, within budget, and to high standards.
Keep abreast of local, regional, and national planning and environmental regulations, ensuring that all projects and initiatives comply with relevant laws and guidelines.
Act as a trusted advisor to clients and internal teams, providing strategic and technical leadership to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions that are robust, compliant with legislative and policy frameworks, and aligned with regional and national water and energy priorities.
Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders - including government agencies, water utilities, research institutions, environmental groups, and community organisations – to enable collaboration, knowledge sharing and joint initiatives.
Provide leadership, guidance, and mentoring to team members, fostering professional growth and a culture of excellence.
Model high standards of ethics, integrity, and collaboration across all activities.
Who you are
Candidates should possess:
Tertiary qualifications in environmental planning, science or engineering or a related field, with 10+ years of leadership experience in delivering statutory environmental and planning approvals and environmental impact assessments, ideally with a strong grounding in South East Australia and experience in water and/ or energy major projects.
Proven ability to identify opportunities, develop proposals, manage contracts and procurement, and drive growth across service lines and regions.
Extensive experience leading complex, multi-disciplinary projects and programs from strategy through delivery, ensuring outcomes are achieved on time, within budget, and to a high standard.
Strong technical capability in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and statutory planning frameworks (VIC and Commonwealth),
with the ability to apply this knowledge to strategic advice and project solutions. Experience in other states desirable (not mandatory).
Demonstrated ability to build strategic partnerships with government agencies, water utilities, First Nations, community groups, and industry stakeholders, supported by excellent facilitation and communication skills.
Skilled in interpreting legislation, policy, and regulatory frameworks, and developing pragmatic, project-focused solutions that balance compliance, risk, and delivery outcomes.
