Manager Strategic & Statutory Planning Local Government
CRG have been enlisted by the Shire of East Pilbara to recruit a highly capable Manager Strategic & Statutory Planning to lead land-use planning in Newman, WA.
This is a rare opportunity to influence long-term strategy, drive high-quality statutory outcomes, and deliver tangible results in a region defined by mining, pastoral land, Crown land complexity, and significant future growth potential.
Key responsibilities:
- You will provide high-level strategic and statutory planning leadership across the Shire. Working closely with Council, internal teams, government agencies, landowners and industry.
- Develop and implement planning strategies that support future land use and economic development.
- Assess, report and recommend on complex land development and land-use applications.
- Lead amendments to the Local Planning Scheme and high-level strategic proposals for Council.
- Manage Crown land, environmental and mining-related planning matters.
- Provide expert advice to elected members, staff and external stakeholders.
- Represent the Shire at the State Administrative Tribunal when require.
- Ensure planning processes are efficient, consistent and aligned with best practice.
Key attributes and Essential Criteria:
We are looking for a confident, experienced local government planner who thrives in a regional setting and is motivated by the challenge of complex planning environments. This is a hands-on leadership role with genuine influence. You will operate with significant autonomy while contributing to the broader direction of the organisation.
- Degree in Urban and Regional Planning (or equivalent qualification recognised by the Planning Institute of Australia)
- Minimum 5 year's experience in strategic land-use planning, preferably within local government
- Robust working knowledge of Western Australian planning legislation, Local Planning Schemes, Crown land administration and related frameworks
- Proven ability to assess complex applications, prepare high-quality reports and provide clear, defensible advice to Council
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills — comfortable engaging with elected members, industry, government agencies and the community
- Strong organisational and self-management skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands
- Competent in relevant systems (Microsoft Office suite, and ideally Synergy Soft / Intramaps or similar) Highly regarded
- Previous experience managing budgets or financial aspects of a planning function
- Experience working in regional or remote local government, particularly in mining or resource-affected areas
