You probably don’t need another Senior Structural Engineer job.
There are plenty of consultancies where you can design buildings, run calculations, coordinate consultants, attend meetings and deliver projects.
The more important question is:
Where is your current role actually taking you?
If you’ve become technically strong but feel like your career has started to plateau, this prospect is worth knowing about.
Maybe you’re already mentoring junior engineers.
Maybe you’re running projects but someone else still owns the client relationship.
Maybe you’ve been told an Associate promotion is coming — but there’s no real timeline.
Or maybe you’ve simply looked at the structure above you and realised there isn’t much room to move.
This role offers something different.
More than another Senior Engineer position
We’re representing an established structural engineering consultancy with a growing Sydney team and a strong pipeline of building projects primarily across mid-sized residential to large multi residential/mixed-use developments, various commercial, and data centres.
They’re looking for an experienced Structural Engineer or current Associate who wants to take greater ownership — not just of engineering design, but of projects, clients, teams and ultimately their career.
Depending on your experience, you could join at Senior, Team Leader or Associate level.
The title matters. But what you’ll actually be trusted to do matters more.
What could change for you?
Own client relationships.
You’ll have the opportunity to build direct relationships with architects, builders, developers and other consultants rather than always sitting one step removed from the client.
Lead projects properly.
Take responsibility for projects from design through delivery, make engineering decisions and become the person clients rely on.
Build your leadership profile.
Mentor younger engineers,
delegate work, provide technical guidance and start developing the people-management side of your career.
Work directly with senior leadership.
You won’t be buried five layers below the decision-makers. You’ll work closely with senior people in the business and have visibility over the broader direction of the consultancy.
Get variety.
The project pipeline extends beyond one repetitive building type, giving you exposure to different structural challenges, materials, clients and sectors.
Have somewhere to go next.
For the right person, this is not intended to be a role where you remain a Senior Structural Engineer indefinitely.
There is genuine scope to progress further as the Sydney team continues to grow.
There are a few non-negotiables:
You’ll need solid experience working within an Australian structural engineering consultancy, ideally with around 6+ years’ experience in building structures.
You should be technically confident across concrete structures and comfortable using structural design packages such as ETABS, RAPT, RAM Concept and SPACEGASS, or similar.
You’ll also need a strong understanding of Australian Standards and the ability to communicate confidently with clients, architects, builders and other consultants.
CPEng / NER would be well regarded, but equally important is where you’re heading professionally.
What next
If you’re starting to wonder whether your current consultancy can genuinely give you more responsibility, more recognition and a realistic pathway beyond Senior Engineer, it may be worth having a conversation.
The question isn’t whether you’re capable of being a Senior Structural Engineer.
It’s whether your current consultancy is giving you somewhere to go next.
