About the Role The Business Manager is responsible for the operational, financial, and resourcing backbone of the practice. This role partners closely with the Partners and Project Directors to ensure the business runs smoothly — from financial performance and forward planning through to recruitment and day-to-day operations. It suits someone who is equally comfortable in the detail of numbers and process, and in the judgement calls of people and priorities.
Key Responsibilities

- Track project and practice-level profitability, utilisation, and margins
- Oversee invoicing, WIP, and debtor management in coordination with finance/accounts
- Prepare financial packs and commentary for Partner review
Business Planning
- Support development of the annual business plan and budget
- Track performance against strategic and financial targets, flagging risks early
- Contribute to pipeline and capacity planning across the practice
- Produce regular reporting on business performance for leadership
Resourcing & Recruitment
- Manage end-to-end recruitment processes: job descriptions, sourcing, interviews, offers
- Maintain visibility of team capacity, utilisation, and upcoming resourcing needs
- Support workforce planning, including contractor/permanent mix decisions
Business Operations
- Own core operational processes (systems, contracts, insurances, compliance, office/IT logistics)
- Act as first point of contact for operational issues affecting the team
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency
- Manage relationships with key suppliers and service providers
About You
- 5+ years’ experience in a business management, operations, or finance role, ideally within professional services or a project-based business
- Strong financial literacy — comfortable owning budgets, forecasts, and reporting
- Experience with recruitment and resource planning with the design space
- Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and competing priorities
- Transparent, direct communicator who can work confidently with senior leadership
- Discretion and sound judgement when handling sensitive commercial and people information
What Success Looks Like
- Financial reporting is timely, accurate, and trusted by leadership
- Resourcing decisions are proactive, not reactive
- Operational processes run with minimal friction
