Experienced occupational therapists and physiotherapists collaborate closely with hand surgeons, GPs, and other specialists to provide coordinated, evidence-based treatment tailored to each person’s needs.

Role Description This is a full time, on-site hand therapist role based in Melbourne, VIC. The hand therapist will assess and treat a wide range of hand and upper limb conditions, including post-operative cases, fractures, soft tissue injuries, tendon and nerve injuries, and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Daily responsibilities include conducting thorough clinical assessments, developing and implementing individualized treatment plans, fabricating custom splints and braces, and providing education on injury management, joint protection, and home exercise programs.

The role also involves coordinating care with surgeons, GPs, and other health professionals, documenting clinical notes, monitoring outcomes, and contributing to return-to-work and functional capacity assessments.



The therapist will support patients through all stages of recovery, promoting evidence-based practice and a high standard of client-centered care.

Qualifications

Professional qualification and registration as an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist, with eligibility to practice in Australia.

Clinical skills in assessment and treatment of hand and upper limb conditions, including post-operative rehabilitation, fracture management, soft tissue and tendon injuries, and nerve injury rehabilitation.

Competence in fabricating custom splints and bracing, and managing scar tissue, swelling, pain, and desensitisation as part of comprehensive rehabilitation.

Experience with functional capacity evaluations, work site assessments, and return-to-work planning, including goal setting and progress monitoring.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with patients, families, surgeons, GPs, and multidisciplinary teams.

Ability to develop individualized treatment programs, including strengthening, conditioning, hydrotherapy, and education in joint protection and self-management.

Commitment to evidence-based practice, ongoing professional development, and adherence to ethical and regulatory standards.

Organisational and time-management skills to manage a varied caseload, maintain accurate clinical documentation, and meet service expectations.

Previous experience in hand therapy or upper limb rehabilitation is highly regarded; relevant postgraduate training or professional courses are an advantage.
