Canning Tax & Advisory is a locally owned accounting and business advisory firm based in Toowoomba. We work closely with a diverse client base across a broad range of industries and professions. As our firm continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced and motivated accountant to join us. The position can be tailored to suit either a strong intermediate or senior accountant based on the successful applicant’s experience, technical capability and career goals.

About the role

This is an opportunity to take genuine ownership of client work rather than being limited to a narrow preparation role. You will work directly with the firm’s director, manage client matters from commencement through to completion and build meaningful relationships with clients. Depending on your experience and interests, there will also be opportunities to become involved in advisory work, reviewing, mentoring and supporting the broader team.

Your responsibilities will include

- preparing statutory financial statements and management accounts;
- preparing income tax returns for individuals, companies, trusts and partnerships;
- preparing Business Activity Statements and Instalment Activity Statements;
- managing assigned jobs and client deliverables from commencement through to review;
- liaising directly with clients, the ATO and other relevant bodies;
- researching technical accounting and taxation issues;
- preparing and assisting with taxation and business advice;
- identifying issues and opportunities within client work;
- supporting other team members with client deliverables; and
- reviewing work and assisting with team development, depending on your experience.

About you

The successful applicant will ideally have:




- a Bachelor of Accounting, Commerce or equivalent qualification;
- at least three years of experience in Australian public practice, with four to six years being preferred;
- demonstrated ability to independently manage and complete business services and taxation work;
- commenced, substantially completed or completed their CA or CPA qualification;
- experience preparing financial statements and income tax returns for various entity types;
- sound knowledge of Australian taxation and accounting requirements;
- the ability to identify and resolve routine technical issues with limited supervision;
- confidence communicating directly with clients;
- strong written and verbal communication skills;
- effective time management and the ability to take ownership of assigned work;
- proficiency in Xero and Microsoft 365; and
- experience with Xero Practice Manager, MYOB or Reckon, although training can be provided where required.
