Lead AI Engineer

Build production-grade AI systems

We’re working with a well-established Australian organisation that is making a significant investment in AI and is looking for a Senior or Lead AI Engineer to join its growing engineering function.

This is a genuinely hands-on senior role for someone who wants to stay close to the technology. You’ll be designing AI solutions, writing production code, making architectural decisions and tackling some of the more complex engineering challenges across LLMs, agents and modern AI applications.

You’ll also have the opportunity to influence how AI engineering is done across the organisation — from architecture and coding standards through to AI operationalisation, production engineering and reusable technical patterns.

What you’ll be doing

- Design and architect scalable, secure AI solutions that move beyond experimentation and into production
- Build and ship production-quality code across LLM and AI-driven applications
- Work with LLMs, RAG, agentic architectures, prompt engineering and modern AI frameworks
- Solve complex technical problems across AI, software engineering and cloud environments
- Establish engineering patterns, coding standards and development practices for AI delivery
- Drive best practice around AI operationalisation, including evaluation, monitoring, deployment and observability




- Review code, mentor engineers and provide technical direction across projects
- Evaluate emerging AI technologies, frameworks and tools and determine where they can add genuine value
- Provide technical leadership across internal and external engineering resources when required

What we’re looking for

- Software engineering leadership experience, with robust recent experience building AI/ML solutions
- Proven experience taking AI systems from concept through to production
- Strong Python skills and solid software engineering fundamentals
- Deep understanding of LLMs, RAG, agents, prompt engineering and modern AI architectures
- Practical experience with AI operationalisation, including evaluation, monitoring, deployment and production observability
- Experience working with major cloud AI platforms and services
- Strong understanding of CI/CD, testing, version control, security and scalable software architecture
- Experience making architectural decisions and setting engineering standards
- A track record of mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership

You'll have the autonomy to influence architecture, introduce better engineering practices and work on meaningful AI problems while the technology continues to evolve.
