Lead API / Mesh Integration Engineer
Company Name: PAAR Systems
Location: Remote / Hybrid
Full-Time
About the Role
We are seeking a Lead API / Mesh Integration Engineer to own the design, development, and evolution of our unified API layer. You will lead the strategy for composing multiple backend services, third-party APIs, and legacy systems into a single, performant GraphQL endpoint using API Mesh technologies. As the technical lead, you will set integration standards, mentor engineers, and partner with product and architecture teams to deliver reliable, secure, and well-documented APIs that power our digital experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, build, and maintain a federated API layer using GraphQL Mesh / API Mesh, unifying REST, GraphQL, SOAP, and event-driven sources into a single schema.
- Define and enforce API design standards, schema governance, versioning strategy, and integration patterns across teams.
- Lead integration of commerce, CMS, ERP, CRM, and other third-party platforms through the mesh layer.
- Develop custom resolvers, transforms, and middleware for schema stitching, field-level authorization, caching, and error handling.
- Own performance, reliability, and observability of the API layer: caching strategy, rate limiting, latency budgets, monitoring, and alerting.
- Implement API security best practices including OAuth 2.0 / OIDC, JWT validation, API keys, and secrets management.
- Establish CI/CD pipelines for mesh configuration, schema validation, contract testing, and automated deployment.
- Mentor and provide technical leadership to integration engineers; conduct design and code reviews.
- Collaborate with product managers, architects,
and frontend teams to translate business requirements into API contracts.
- Produce and maintain clear technical documentation, runbooks, and onboarding guides for the API platform.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years focused on API development and systems integration.
- Hands-on expertise with GraphQL and API Mesh tooling (e.g., GraphQL Mesh, Apollo Federation, Adobe API Mesh, or similar gateway/federation platforms).
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and Node.js; experience writing custom resolvers and transforms.
- Deep understanding of REST, GraphQL, webhooks, and event-driven integration patterns (queues, pub/sub, streaming).
- Experience with API gateways, edge/serverless runtimes, and caching layers (CDN, Redis, response caching).
- Solid grounding in API security: OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWT, CORS, rate limiting, and secrets management.
- Experience with CI/CD, Git-based workflows, automated testing (unit, contract, integration), and infrastructure as code.
- Proven technical leadership: mentoring engineers, driving architectural decisions, and leading cross-team initiatives.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex integration topics to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Adobe Commerce / App Builder, commercetools, or other composable commerce ecosystems.
- Familiarity with schema registries, API catalogs, and governance tooling.
- Experience with observability stacks (OpenTelemetry, Datadog, New Relic, Grafana).
- Cloud platform experience (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Exposure to iPaaS/middleware platforms (MuleSoft, Boomi, Workato) and legacy modernization projects.
- Contributions to open-source API tooling or public technical writing/speaking.
What Success Looks Like
- First 90 days: Audit the current integration landscape, establish mesh architecture standards, and ship the first unified schema domains.
- 6 months: Consolidated API layer in production with monitoring, caching, and security baselines; team following documented integration patterns.
- 12 months: Self-service API platform adopted across teams, measurable latency and reliability improvements, and a mentored, high-performing integration team.
What We Offer
- Market-competitive salary of [salary range] plus [bonus/equity details].
- [Health, dental, vision] benefits and [retirement plan] with company match.
- [PTO policy], flexible working arrangements, and [remote/hybrid] options.
- Annual learning budget, conference attendance, and certification support.
