Your Mission Sharks solved drag 400 million years ago. Aviation is still working on it. MAKO's Flightfilm brings the same microscopic drag-reducing structures found on sharks to aircraft surfaces, with the ambition of saving billions in fuel and taking megatonnes of CO2 out of the sky every year.

We're hiring a Materials Engineer (Manufacturing Systems) to design and deliver the manufacturing systems behind Flightfilm. You'll report to our Head of Manufacturing Systems. What you’ll do Define product and process requirements from validation criteria and user needs

Quantify, monitor and communicate technical and project risk

Design manufacturing systems balancing product spec, cost, manufacturability, mistake-proofing, safety, usability, repeatability, reproducibility, and quality and regulatory compliance

Design and run evaluation activities including experimental setup, problem solving, data capture

Develop standard operating procedures and work instructions What Success Looks Like First Month:

Develop a strong understanding of FlightFilm material architecture, performance requirements, manufacturing processes, and certification context

Review existing manufacturing system documentation including requirements, design documentation, risk management plans, verification and validation testing and work instructions

Learn how to perform relevant manufacturing processes

Build working relationships with Manufacturing Systems, Product Engineering, Certification, Manufacturing, and Quality teams

First Six Months

Demonstrate ownership of key processes including requirements definition, design and de-risking activities, process evaluation and manufacturing handover

Identify and plan implementation of key system and process improvements

Demonstrate structured, evidence-guided problem solving on live technical challenges

First Year: Lead end-to-end manufacturing system and process developments that materially advance yield, throughput, cost of goods and process stability indicators

Work to, and contribute to the development of design guides and methodologies that are adopted across the team and reduce design cycle time

Be recognised internally as a reliable technical contributor who navigates ambiguity effectively and keeps programs moving

Have meaningfully uplifted the materials engineering capability of the broader team About You

Degree in a relevant discipline (Materials, Chemistry or equivalent)

Thrive in a fast-moving, ambiguous, and constantly evolving startup environment

3+ years of experience in materials or manufacturing systems/process engineering within a technically complex, regulated industry such as aviation, aerospace, automotive, or medical

Hands on, proactive, and solutions focused mindset with an ability to work in a team

Demonstrated the ability to develop material compositions to meet identified requirements

Familiarity with agile product engineering methodologies and internationally recognised quality management systems (ISO 9001, AS9100)

Solid quantitative skills, including statistical analysis of experimental results

Able to navigate complex, ambiguous situations and make evidence-guided decisions with confidence Why You Should Join MAKO

Impact: Aviation is one of the hardest to abate industries, and its share of global emissions is only growing. Join our mission to improve the efficiency of the global fleet and save millions of tonnes of CO2 every year

Technology: Our technology leverages the drag-reducing properties of shark skin to make aircraft more efficient. You'll be exposed to expertise and developments in materials, photolithography, fluid dynamics, and scale manufacturing

Team: Our team focuses on achieving our mission. We live our values of lift over drag, active transparency, and changing the boundary conditions, and we welcome recent team members who want to do the same

Corporate Jet: We have (most of) a corporate jet. It won't fly, but it sure does look cool Sharks had 400 million years. We're on a tighter schedule.
