ACE Integrated Energy

Location: Cranbourne West, VIC 3977

Employment: Full-time

Reporting to: Operations Manager

Key Selling Points

- Hands-on SolidWorks and sheet-metal design role

- Coordinate designs from 3D model through laser cutting and production

About the Role

ACE Integrated Energy is seeking a practical and detail-focused Mechanical Design Engineer to join our switchboard manufacturing team in Melbourne.

This is a mechanical design and production-focused position. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating accurate 3D models and manufacturing drawings for switchboard enclosures and associated sheet-metal components.

You will manage designs through the complete manufacturing process, including 3D modelling, sheet-metal development, flat patterning, nesting, material selection and preparation of files for laser cutting and production.

You will work closely with our Design Support Team, laser operators, fabrication personnel, assembly teams and suppliers to ensure that designs are practical, accurate and ready for manufacture.

This position is focused on mechanical engineering, sheet-metal design and production coordination.

Key Responsibilities

- Create detailed 3D models of switchboard enclosures using SolidWorks.

- Design sheet-metal components including cubicles, doors, panels, mounting plates, gland plates, covers, brackets and internal support structures.

- Produce accurate manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings and fabrication details.

- Develop sheet-metal flat patterns with correct bend allowances and manufacturing tolerances.

- Prepare nesting layouts to maximise material utilisation and minimise waste.

- Prepare and process files for laser cutting, folding and fabrication.

- Work with different materials, thicknesses and finishes, including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and other specified materials.

- Coordinate laser-cutting requirements with internal production teams and external suppliers.

- Ensure drawings and cutting files are released in line with production priorities.

- Review designs for manufacturability, assembly access, clearances and efficient material usage.

- Maintain accurate bills of materials, drawing registers and revision records.

- Provide technical support to laser, fabrication, and assembly personnel.

- Resolve design and production issues in consultation with the Operations Manager and Design Support Team.

- Monitor the progress of jobs from design release through fabrication and assembly.

- Assist with production planning and communicate potential delays, material issues or manufacturing constraints.

- Update drawings to reflect approved production changes and as-built requirements.

- Support the development of standard enclosure designs, SolidWorks templates and reusable component libraries.

- Contribute to improvements in manufacturing efficiency, material utilisation, and production flow.

About You To be successful in this role, you will have:

- A qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline.

- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks.

- Demonstrated experience with 3D modelling and detailed manufacturing drawings.

- Strong knowledge of SolidWorks sheet-metal tools.

- Experience producing flat patterns for laser cutting and fabrication.

- Experience with nesting and material optimisation.

- A sound understanding of sheet-metal fabrication processes, including laser cutting, folding, welding and assembly.

- An understanding of bend allowances, bend deductions, tolerances and material properties.

- The ability to design using different material types and thicknesses.

- Experience preparing DXF files and other production-ready files for laser processing.

- The ability to identify design clashes, manufacturing risks and production constraints.

- Strong attention to detail and document-control skills.

- Good communication and coordination skills.

- A practical, solutions-focused approach to engineering and manufacturing.

- The ability to manage multiple jobs and production priorities.

Highly Regarded The following experience would be advantageous but is not essential:

- Experience designing electrical switchboard or control-panel enclosures.

- Experience in switchboard, electrical-equipment or industrial-enclosure manufacturing.

- Experience with laser nesting or CAD/CAM software.

- Experience coordinating work with laser-cutting suppliers.

- Experience creating bills of materials and manufacturing packs.

- Knowledge of lean manufacturing or continuous-improvement principles.

Previous electrical design experience is not essential as electrical design will be managed by the Design Support Team.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who can take ownership of the mechanical design and manufacturing preparation process. You will be comfortable working both at a computer and directly with production personnel on the factory floor.

The ideal candidate will be able to take a concept or design requirement and convert it into an accurate, practical and production-ready SolidWorks model, flat pattern, nesting layout and manufacturing package.

You will understand that a successful design must not only look correct on screen, but must also be efficient to cut, fold, assemble and manufacture.

What We Offer

- A full-time position with a growing Melbourne-based manufacturing business.

- A hands-on engineering role with direct involvement in production.

- The opportunity to manage designs from initial modelling through to completed manufacture.

- Exposure to a variety of switchboard enclosure and sheet-metal manufacturing projects.

- A team-oriented working environment involving engineering, design, laser, fabrication and assembly teams.

- Opportunities to improve production systems, standardise designs and develop manufacturing processes.

- Remuneration based on qualifications and relevant experience.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume together with a brief cover letter outlining:

- Your SolidWorks experience.

- Your experience with sheet-metal design and flat patterning.

- Your experience preparing files for laser cutting and nesting.

- Examples of products, enclosures or fabricated assemblies you have designed.

- Your availability to commence.

Candidates with robust mechanical design and sheet-metal manufacturing experience are encouraged to apply.
