Sometimes that means moving smoothly through a groom; other times it means alternating tasks, taking breaks, or returning to an area later because that is what the dog needs.

Due to continued growth, Spitz Groom is seeking an experienced Dog Groomer to join our established team in Carlton North.

We’re looking for a talented groomer who is passionate about their craft, takes pride in delivering exceptional results across a variety of breeds and coat types, and enjoys working in a salon that values quality, professionalism, animal welfare and continuous improvement over volume.

This is a casual position offering approximately 18–24 hours per week, typically across three days — primarily Wednesday, Thursday and Friday — with shifts of approximately 6–8 hours per day and some flexibility around start and finish times.

There is potential for the position to increase in hours, potentially up to full-time, depending on client demand and business growth. Weekend work is also available if this appeals to you.

About You

As an experienced Dog Groomer, you’ll be confident clipping and scissoring across a wide range of breeds and coat types without supervision. Double-coated breeds are a core part of our business, so you’ll also need to be comfortable with the significant brushing, coat preparation, drying and de-shedding involved in maintaining these coats correctly.

To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

- A minimum of 2–3 years’ professional dog grooming experience;
- The ability to complete grooming services independently and unsupervised;
- The ability to maintain a purposeful and appropriate grooming pace while adapting the order,



timing and approach of the groom to the individual dog’s behaviour, comfort and welfare;
- The ability to use professional judgement to prioritise grooming tasks and achieve the best appropriate outcome within the agreed appointment scope and available time, without compromising the dog’s comfort, safety or welfare;
- Advanced knowledge of grooming techniques, equipment, breed standards, coat types and maintenance requirements;
- Strong knowledge of double-coated breeds and appropriate coat-preservation techniques, including thorough brushing, line brushing, de-shedding and coat preparation;
- The physical capacity to undertake sustained brushing, drying, de-shedding and other repetitive grooming tasks associated with heavily coated breeds while maintaining safe working practices;
- Confidence completing breed-specific and breed-standard trims across a range of breeds;
- Strong scissoring and finishing skills;
- Experience with hand stripping would be highly regarded;
- The ability to confidently provide client consultations and accurate grooming quotations;
- Confidence using digital systems and technology for appointments, client records and day-to-day salon communication; experience with grooming software such as MoeGo would be highly regarded;
- Strong written communication and attention to detail, with the ability to maintain clear, accurate and useful grooming reports and client reference notes;
- Excellent dog handling skills, including confidence working with dogs displaying significant fear, anxiety, reactivity or aggressive behaviour, using calm, low-stress and force-free handling rather than defaulting to muzzling or physical restraint;
- Confidence working with senior dogs and dogs with reduced mobility or physical limitations, adapting handling, positioning, grooming techniques and pace to prioritise their comfort, safety and welfare;
- Working knowledge of canine anatomy, coat and skin health, and common veterinary terminology;
- High standards of personal and workplace cleanliness and hygiene, with a thorough understanding of the correct cleaning, sanitisation and maintenance of grooming tools and equipment;
- Strong communication and customer service skills;
- A genuine passion for ongoing learning and improving your craft;
- Your own grooming scissors (all other tools of the trade are provided by the business);
- An understanding of a groomer’s role in supporting canine welfare while recognising when veterinary referral is appropriate.

Your Responsibilities

- Deliver high-quality grooming services across a variety of breeds, coat types and grooming styles;
- Perform bathing, drying, brushing, de-shedding, clipping, hand scissoring and breed-specific styling;
- Provide appropriate coat care and coat-preservation grooming for double-coated breeds;
- Manage each groom thoughtfully and with purpose, adapting the sequence, pace and techniques used according to the individual dog rather than following a rigid grooming process;




- Use professional judgement to prioritise grooming needs where an appointment has a defined scope or time allowance, clearly communicating when not all requested grooming can reasonably or safely be completed;
- Conduct client consultations and recommend suitable grooming options based on the individual dog, coat condition and owner’s preferences;
- Provide aftercare advice and practical coat-maintenance education to pet owners;
- Recommend appropriate grooming, coat-care and other relevant products where they may genuinely assist owners in caring for their dog between appointments;
- Complete a grooming report following each appointment, providing owners with relevant information about their dog’s groom, coat condition, behaviour and any recommended ongoing care;
- Maintain clear and detailed grooming reference notes after each appointment to support continuity of care and provide an accurate record for future visits;
- Work appropriately with senior dogs and dogs with mobility, behavioural or other individual support needs;
- Identify, document and communicate potential health, skin, coat or behavioural concerns observed during grooming;
- Build strong relationships with clients while confidently and professionally managing expectations;
- Handle special grooming requests and individual coat or behavioural requirements;
- Maintain accurate client and grooming records using our salon management systems;
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, sanitation and hygiene throughout the salon, including the proper cleaning and maintenance of grooming tools and equipment;
- Stay up to date with current grooming techniques, industry developments and best practices;
- Maintain high standards of animal welfare, safety and professional presentation at all times.
