Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technology Risk 1LoD

Location: Sydney

About the Role

As a Senior Manager in our Technology Operational Risk team, you will play a key role in coordinating and delivering complex risk programs of work across the business. This role carries a strong and growing focus on artificial intelligence (AI) risk, reflecting the increasing adoption of AI and machine learning across retail banking platforms and the need for robust, proportionate risk oversight as these technologies scale.

You will collaborate with teams across Assurance, Banking and Wealth Products, Technology, Line 2 Risk and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of risk initiatives, including those relating to the responsible development, deployment and oversight of AI systems. You will work with stakeholders across the retail portfolio to drive a strong, proactive risk culture and a clear understanding of the risk framework, including how existing technology risk disciplines extend to AI-specific considerations such as model governance, explainability, bias, data lineage and human oversight.

Key Responsibilities

- Coordinate and deliver complex technology risk programs of work, partnering with Assurance, Technology, Line 2 Risk and business stakeholders to ensure successful design and implementation.
- Provide subject matter input on AI and emerging technology risk, including the identification, assessment and management of risks arising from the development, procurement, deployment and ongoing use of AI and machine learning capabilities.
- Support the uplift and embedment of risk frameworks and controls relevant to AI use cases, covering areas such as model risk, data governance, algorithmic bias, explainability, third-party / vendor AI tools, and human-in-the-loop oversight.
- Partner with technology and business teams to assess AI-related risks across the system development lifecycle, from ideation and design through to deployment, monitoring and decommissioning.
- Drive a solid, proactive risk culture across the personal banking division,

building a clear understanding of the risk framework among business leaders and technology teams, including how it applies to AI and automated decision-making.
- Lead and contribute to risk assessments, control evaluations and assurance activities across technology domains, including IT general controls, access management, cybersecurity and software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes.
- Engage proactively with business leaders and risk management colleagues to identify, escalate and manage anticipated and emerging risk issues, including those associated with new and evolving technologies.
- Support reporting and governance forums by preparing clear, well-evidenced risk papers, briefings and updates for senior stakeholders and risk committees.
- Stay abreast of regulatory developments, industry practice and internal policy relating to AI governance and technology risk, translating these into practical guidance for the business.

What You Offer

- Technology expertise with operational risk management or assurance experience, ideally within financial services or another regulated industry.
- Familiarity with AI and machine learning risk concepts (e.g. model governance, data quality and bias, explainability, third-party AI tools) or a robust willingness and aptitude to develop this expertise quickly.
- Ability to think laterally, problem-solve and grasp abstract concepts and complex situations, including novel risks posed by emerging technologies.
- Excellent communication skills, with the capacity to initiate and lead conversations with business leaders and risk management colleagues regarding anticipated and emerging issues.
- Strong knowledge of IT general controls and processes, such as software development lifecycle (SDLC), access management and cybersecurity.
- Good understanding of the financial services environment and technology platforms such as public cloud and SaaS; exposure to Agile, DevOps or SRE principles will be advantageous.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in technology, risk, or a related discipline; industry certifications (e.g. CRISC, CISA, CISM) are well regarded but not essential.
